Hey everybody.

I installed the AWE exhaust on my Tungsten HO about 2 months ago. I am not sure if I was just used to how quite the stock exhaust was, but holy crap this thing is loud. On cold starts it is crazy and calms down to tolerable sound level. After riding around with it for about a month i started looking into toning it down a few notches due to the loud raspy sound during acceleration between 2000-3000 rpms. What I ended up adding was some straight through spiral notched resonators after the AWE cans. This did exactly what I was hoping for. I can still hear the exhaust sound but dialed back some. I do have to say that the WOT runs give a great sounding burble at gear changes, before and after adding the resonators.

If you are thinking about adding the AWE exhaust, just know it is LOUD due to being a straight pipe design. If you had a Hemi Ram before, like I did, the sound takes some getting used too. I do not regret this purchase but wish AWE had an option for resonators.

Interesting. I’m waiting on shipment of mine. Best sounding exhaust I found. I’m coming from a bmw m5 with a cat delete so figured no matter what this will be quieter. But the raspy bit has me concerned. Didn’t hear that in any of the test videos I listened too.

Can you post a link to the resonators you added?

I, like you, watched a lot of videos on different exhaust and found this one to be the best sounding. Unfortunately the manufactures videos from the interior don't capture the gear changes at the 2000-3000 rpm range and that is where the raspy sound is. Here is the link to the spiral notched resonators. If you install them with the notches facing forward it will knock a few dB's off and clean up the raspy sound.

Alright well there goes my plan to do a full diy install. My awe arrives Sunday it seems. I’ll order these and have my exhaust shop install

Thanks for the tip I am liking the exhaust on my limited but the drone in sport in low RPMs is getting a little annoying to me I may try these out! Also I have the off road package and the mufflers hit part of a skid plate I think so there some rattle underneath especially in cold temps while sitting...

Can you clarify what you mean when you say “notches facing forward”? In the diagram it appears that they say to install with the notches facing toward the exit. Just want to make sure you mean to do the opposite as they recommend.

Yeah, I had a muffler shop weld in the resonators past the AWE cans and weld a support rod between them so they don't move. They probably would not have but the AWE pipe right before the cans came out of the hanger bracket and this will keep that from happening again.

The resonators take the edge off and quite it down just a bit. It does still get loud under acceleration, between 2000-3000 rpms, but the sound is not as annoying when you are cruising at 75-85 mph.

You might want to check to make sure the exhaust is still in the hanger brackets right before the AWE cans. I was noticing some rattles every now and again and didn't realize that it was because the exhaust came out that hanger bracket. The muffler shop showed me.

You can definitely have the notches facing the rear of the truck for a louder sound and they will not be grabbing the airflow as it passes through the resonator. I choose to have them facing towards the front of the truck so that they grab some airflow and tone down the raspy sound some. I was looking to quite it down more.

In the picture below you can see the spiral notches and you want to install the resonator with them facing the engine to increase the sound dampening. This is a straight through design, so don't be worried about it being too quite.

Good to know I will have the shop look at it on the lift for me! It's not all the time but can hear a loud rattle every so often while sitting idling its weird, fix hopefully is just easy like it came out of the hangars! Exhaust sounds cool when you're flooring it though! haha

Good luck and hope it is simple. It does sound really good during WOT and love the burble when it shifts gears.

I had this happen to my x pipe on my M5. Ended up putting a couple washers to act as spacers to raise the support plate away from the exhaust. Stopped the rattle.

CajunHeat,

Thanks for the review, overall assessment, and adjustment to the AWE exhaust for our H.O.s. So, this exhaust system will settle after initial installation and will need ot be loosened up and readjusted and retightened to take the settling exhaust off the front crossover assembly and away from the frame. Not a big deal but AWE needs to do something about their exhaust flanges, as they flex and loosen easily (initially) and will need to be retightened to keep the system secure and in place. They tell you that in the installation instructions. Not a big deal, easy fix.

As far as that harmonic resonance at that 2000-3300rpm level, yeah that is somewhat annoying, but play with the drive modes between normal and sport and find a good balance. I have the CAT6, so I can play with the tune a bit with throttle response, boost response in selective gears and power levels and found a good baseline for me that works well. I also just installed the S&B CAI and so things are getting dialed in which perhaps wil require me to adjust some things a bit.

In the end, we own the badassery of the RAM 1500 lineup and every bolt-on we put on them equals more badassery and much comfort and luxury in a truck that sets it apart from the rest of the field and it's reliable! It's tuff to buy something this valuable with so much of eveything you want from a truck! The SST H.O. is a marvel of engineering! Happy Owner!
