Having a weird issue with my truck where there is a strong smell of propane outside and sometimes inside. I’ve read posts about people having a strong weed smell coming from the truck, this isn’t weed, definitely more propane/natural gas. I first noticed it towing a 6k ish camper down to the smokies. I was running up some decent hills at 70mph and there was a really strong smell of propane. I thought I was passing some gas mines or something but it stuck with us for the rest of the trip down but was faint. I did think maybe it was my camper leaking propane but ruled that out after smelling it again after driving on the blue ridge parkway without the trailer. We would get out at scenic lookouts and the truck stunk of propane outside. Had 3k mikes on when it started, now at 7k and still smell it sometimes. It’s usually during or after towing. I have the the eTorque 5.7 motor with 3.92’s. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

Propane has a “rotten egg” (sulfur) smell added to it to detect leaks.

The only place you should (well, shouldn’t) get a sulfur smell in your truck would be from the catalytic converter. This would suggest some sort of emissions system failure.

You should get it checked out. Definitely not normal and “sulfur smell” should get a good mechanic looking. (If your state does emissions testing that may be another place to start)

Odd but as I read your first sentence I immediately thought, does he tow a camper? And of course you followed it up with towing. My 2011 Ford F-150 Ecoboost had that smell. I never figured it out definitively but I did use 93 octane while towing and thought it may be that or the brand of gas I was using. Maybe try another brand and see what happens.

Hello midntrdr,

We understand your desire to find out what this smell may be. If you end up going into the dealer, let us know. Our team can be contacted via direct message and would be happy to help with that process.

Anyone figure this out? I've been getting this smell too. Would definitely say it smells like propane/natural gas additive.

With a strong smell inside the cab with the etorque engine could be the battery behind the rear seat. I would have it checked out at a dealership before it becomes a problem
