Anybody Park In a Normal Size Garage?

Yeah our current garage is 20x20 but I didn't have a truck when we built this house. So it wasn't a big deal to me. It still isn't really, as I will have a carport to park under. I have always parked outside the garage even when I had cars/trucks that would fit. The outside dimensions of the garage they are building on our new home is 23x23, but you lose some of that due to drywall and the door. But I am pretty sure my truck will fit in there if I want it to. I just may not want it to, so I can have more room to maneuver around it. My main concern was for pulling it in the garage for detailing purposes. And that should be fine.

The most common is 20'x20' but normally that is the outside dimension, you lose room with the door and drywall. If your building a house make sure you address the garage size with your builder, amazes me how many people over look it until it's time to park thier 20' pickup truck inside.

I pulled my garage an additional 6’ and it cost all of $600 … $100 a foot …. Just forgot the 8’ garage door, or I’d be shoppin 6” lifts and 325/60R20 tires

I have a 3 car garage that's 20x28 and have had 4 cars and 2 motorcycles in it at one time. My ceilings are 10', so I put in a lift. One motorcycle was in the middle spot, against the front wall, with my wife's car, and the other motorcycle would go between the cars. It was tight. Once I got the truck, my son's car was moved out of the garage and we sold the 2 motorcycles, so my truck barely fits in the middle space now. I had 2 Camaros on the lift. They barely fit with the 10' ceilings.

I wish homebuilders would provide larger garages, but every one I talk to in developments, provide 7' tall doors on 20' deep garages. Florida sucks for finding a home in an area where you can get custom built.

Right now, we're squeezing it into a below-ground-level garage that has a curved retaining wall beside the carport (curving towards the door, not away.) Getting the truck in is a lot easier than getting it out. I also have to lower to Entry/Exit mode when parking inside because of a beam running horizontally across the garage. The door is a standard size. The depth of the garage worked out to give me a decent amount of room in front and behind the truck.

We've planned to build an external garage for our camper that will have a bay for the truck too.

For a custom built house -

For a single bay garage to take a non-lifted pickup you need a 10’ wide x 8’ tall door.

Having a double door works if the wife has a smaller car but if the wife is driving a Tahoe or Suburban no can do.

Sure you can go to a 20’ wide door but I would rather have a set of double 10‘ doors.

So if you are building custom home and have a few dollars left over you want two bays with 10‘ wide doors and add two feet between the garage doors so passengers can get in and out.

Now add three feet on the walls so passengers can get in / out so we’re now up to a 28’ wide garage, inside dimensions.

A two foot wide bench for dad running with width of the garage for tools plus a three foot wide walkway between your hood ornament and the bench so you can get a screw driver off the wall at 22:00 or work at your bench without backing the truck out of the garage.

Now add the 20’ long truck and one foot at the rear bumper and shazam we’re now up to a garage that is 26’ deep x 28’ wide.

More is better but these are the minimum numbers for a “comfortable“ custom garage with a workbench for dad to putter.

For bonus points a ten foot ceiling so you can move around a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood without knocking off a light or two.

Then for your last of pennies in your pocket add in a bunch of high powered LED bulbs to light up the garage at night.

Don’t forget a lot of plugs along dad’s bench.

Start adding bikes and trikes and kayaks and someone‘s $55k vehicle is sleeping outside in the hailstorm to protect a few $300 bikes.

26’ D X 24’ W …. Couldn’t go wider, should have gone 28’

7’ tall door fits a non-lifted truck (even my ORG-equipped truck with the air suspension fully raised on stock tires). You wouldn’t want to risk it with any lift, though.

32.5’ x 46’ with 8 x 18’ + 11’ doors . Where the lift is located was the overhead garage doors when we bought the house in 2007. Easily fixed pushing the front out 22’ and modifying the ceiling trusses for a lift that is 12’ tall. 4 months during winter the 24’ trailer with race car is stored. Trailer is 99” tall with tires but drops low enough with modified rims to fit through the 95” tall door. Garage.JPG Garage_1.JPG

My garage was advertised as 20’ deep but in reality it is just 19’6”. I purchased a quad cab long bed because it’s overall length is shorter than the crew cab short bed. I have a tennis ball on a string to help pulling in. I’m fine with the 7’ door, no plans for larger tires of a lift kit.

Same. I have a step along the front so I can only pull in so far. The 4" shorter Quad Cab made all the difference. Pics from my QC 'test fit' before I bought my Delmonico Red. Dealer initially didn't want to give me a QC to try since he thought it was the same length as the CC I already tried (and failed) to fit in there.

I have a step in the garage, too, so backing my CC short bed in is my only option. Haven't done it yet, hopefully it will work! 😁

Here are a few pix. It ain’t pretty, but it works. Just barely over 20 feet long, and 81.5 inches tall. Space between my truck and my wife’s SUV is a pain with the car seats, so I angle it in. I could back it in which would help a little, but that takes longer and I’d also have to raise the cabinets. Real estate in general is a premium, I’ve had to get creative with things like a folding work bench.

I have a “spotter” string, a tennis ball, a parking stop, and foam on the walls.

I'm in the middle of buying a house, tried to find one with a deeper garage but in the current housing market it's pretty tough. I'm thinking about notching out the back wall just high enough for the hood to fit under similar to the below to give me a few extra inches.

Only reason I mentioned 8’ was it makes it nice if you plan to lift …. With the darn shark fin, it doesn’t take much to get to 7’

one more reason to get the air suspension, I just lower it to Aero to be safe when I go in garage.

Well I have a somewhat conventional garage that was 237 inches deep. The garage door has 71 inches of room. i Spent a full week reorganizing my garage to make it fit including cutting my 10 ft x 2 ft heavy duty work bench in half and making it fit in window indentations in the side of my garage. Eventually I had 5 inches of room lengthwie, 6 inches width wise (I needed power folding trailer mirrors to get in), and 2 inches of room for the shark fin. But by god it fits! My wife’s Camry also fits too. I just couldn’t leave it parked outside for all the rift raft that comes through the neighborhood from time to time. I bought this exact truck, including the 18 inch tires knowing what room I had to work with. The first 10 or 20 times it was kind of nerve wracking, but now I think nothing of it.

I’m honestly not sure what the normal depth is, but I know the truck won’t fit, but thankfully when we had our house built we did the 3rd car spot 6’ extra deep, so that’s where it goes. Need to clean up the area a bit and move things around once my other car sells, but it’s fine for now.

My garage is 19' 8" from wall to door hardware, and there is a 3' deep ledge at the wall, so I have to back in. Hooray for the rear camera!
