28 Volt Battery WTF!

With 45k miles on my 2022 I've been happy with the ETorque, which is to say that I barely notice it. But, my AI assistant just told me that the 28 volt battery in the ETorque system only last 5 -7 years and cost nearly $3k to replace. I seriously doubt the gas saving from the stop start will save that much money. Does anyone know What happens if I don't replace the battery?

The 48 volt battery is covered under the 8-year/80,000-mile federal emissions warranty.

The bad news is the truck will likely fail to run when the 48V battery dies. The conventional 12V battery gets charged from the eTorque battery via a DC to DC converter.

The good news is the entire eTorque system including the 48V battery, the motor/generator, and the controller, all are covered by the 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty. So for you and me, covered until 2030 unless the total miles limit gets reached first.

On edit: I do think it is a 48V battery, I see 24V in the thread title.

No need for an aftermarket yet, but I'm sure there will be later as more batteries fail outside of the warranty.

As to if there will ever be enough gas savings from the system, probably not. It is a seamless system and it does add some extra torque off-the-line which I like. I consider these intangible benefits of the system. Separate from this is the emissions aspect of the implementation as it technically makes the truck a hybrid. Also as an emissions system, disabling or modifying it is prohibited by law for use on public roads, just like catalytic converters. My big worry -- and I try not to worry about it -- is the ongoing long lead time for replacement motor-generators under the warranty.

I wouldn't listen you your AI since it doesn't even know you actually have a 48 volt battery. And since there isn't any real data to back it up yet, I wouldn't worry. I bet some aftermarket company will hopefully step up with either a replacement option or something to remove it completely.
