Looking at ordering a 21 Big Horn to replace my 11 F150 Supercrew. I purchased 2 Supercrew pickups in the last 19 years and keep my vehicles in good shape, I still have my 01 with 205k in excellent shape. I know theres a lot of posts on rear end ratios but searched for my question and could not find. My 11 Supercrew has a 6 speed transmission with a 3.55 rear end, how would this set up compare to a Big Horn with a Hemi, 8 speed, and 3.92? I live on flat ground and pull my boat trailer in the summer and enclosed sled trailer in the winter to the mountains so l’m looking for a pickup that I can pull with maybe 10-15% of the time. Also looking at a eco boost in a new Supercrew since I know they can pull and get decent mpg but would rather have a V8 and it looks like more for your money with a Ram.

You won't notice a negative difference going to 3.92 with the 8 speed tranny, if anything it will pull better than the 3.55 with 6 speed. Hemi will get 8-10MPG towing over 5000lbs, 15mpg unloaded mixed driving, if you go ecodiesel you'd bump that up to 12-14mpg towing and 25mpg mixed unloaded and have a better towing experience rumbling along at 1500rpm vs 2500-4000 with the hemi.

I've owned two 4th gen Ram 1500s with 3.92 differentials and they towed nice, especially my last with the 8-speed. In those days I was towing about 9500 pound tractor/trailer combination in mixed topography. With the 8-speed I averaged about 14 MPG while towing.

My current 5th gen is the same configuration as my 4th gens with the exception of 3.21 axle and reduced to towing just under 6000 pounds. Same towing topography. On my three pulls so far the average is 14.2 MPG.

The difference is my weekly, around town and mixed country driving average is around 22 MPG with the 3.21 axle. That's about 2 MPG more than my previous 3.92 4th gen.

Best regards,
Dusty
