Hi @Buster05 - We certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you are not able to determine a solution based on suggestions from fellow forum members and you decide to address this with your Ram dealer, please be sure to follow up with us via private message. We would be more than willing to escalate your situation to a specialist who can work alongside you and your dealer while your truck is in service.

My truck does the same thing (among other transmission shifting/vibration issues). You can also reproduce the thump if you shift from Park, Drive, Reverse when stopped. You’ll hear it clunk back and forth from underneath. I just went through 3 dealer visits, FCA Customer Care, NCDS arbitration and through it all received no support or acknowledgement of a problem. 6 months of time spent and no improvements.

I’m told, it’s a characteristic of the vehicle and it’s operating as designed. So any clunks or bumps or shudders or vibrations in the driveline are normal... But, I have never experienced this with my previous 4th gen or Durango with the 8 speed.

Had this problem on my 2010 (2 wheel drive). That version had a three-piece driveshaft. The rear section has a splined, telescoping rear section. The technician removed the rear most section, coated the spline area with grease, and reassembled. This completely resolved the issue.

I had this problem and they performed an update on the transmission. I've only driven a few hundred miles since but no problems yet

I agree. That's the first thing I would look at. I had that happen a couple of times back in the 80's before I moved to Florida dealing with the salt and slop in Michigan winters. Never had issues down south but I'm now back in Michigan so I'll see what happens. A plus now is I'm not daily driving to work and if the weather's lousy I stay put in the house. Haha, I've been pretty much stuck in the house since March..... Grrrrr

I have an early 19. Bighorn. Was fine when I picked it up. Have had 3 reflashes. Slightly better but the problems remain. On take off, there is always a slight shudder and the trans likes to bump randomly. Sometimes at a stop, I take my foot off the brake then a bump. On the throttle hard its fine. Its in stop and go that it behaves badly. Im living with it at this point.
One word of caution, if you drive 2 feet, like most mechanics do. This transmission doesn't like it at all. Any slight throttle pressure while braked makes it misbehave. My 6 speed 2012 was flawless, this 8 speed is temperamental.

You guys need to talk with another dealer, but that's not normal.

I only have rave reviews for my tranny, it's one of the smoothest autos I've ever had, zero shudder or anything remotely considered off. I get compliments all the time how smooth this truck drives.

When I read of people having issues and living with it, it really pains me to read that. Probably because the dealer sucks and doesn't care enough to figure it out. You guys shouldn't have to be living with an issue that I would consider major, no mater how subtle it can seem.

I'm with you on the tranny. Had a problem not coming out of 1st gear (resolved itself after an hour of sitting). I believe /hope it was battery related (dealer replaced under warranty). Sometime I guess the Ram has to act like a misguided child and as such still love it.

If RamCared, you would issue a recall on these defective driveshafts!! Period!

This issue doesn't seem to be common. I'm not seeing any kind of TSB or recall for this anytime soon. Both the 5th gens I've owned have not had any drive train clunks, bumps, or weird noises.
