Figured I would share my experience here. My eTorque MGU started making a high-pitched sound last August at 67k miles. I brought it into the dealership and they determined the bearings were failing on the eTorque so they replaced it under the 80k federal emissions warranty. I ended up being without my truck for about 2 weeks.

A year later, at 78k miles, I'm at a busy intersection, I release the brake pedal and the truck doesn't restart from the auto stop/start. Smoke starts coming out of the hood.

I take it to my local guy who determines that the smoke came from the starter. Replaces the starter and subsequently discovers the eTorque MGU (the one replaced a year earlier) has apparently failed and that's what burned out the starter. So I tow it to a dealership who confirms the diagnosis. Now of course the MGU is backordered with no ETA, thousands of trucks are waiting for parts. It could be weeks or even months.

I did message @RamCares this morning, haven't heard back yet. Hoping I can get Stellantis to expedite my part order and help me out with the cost of a rental car, the dead starter, and the towing.

Has anyone else had multiple eTorque units fail on them?

I haven't had multiple but I did have mine fail back in late June at 93k miles. Didn't fail hard like that but threw a code and started having voltage fluctuations. It took 3 weeks to get a new MGU with the help of Ram Customer service "expediting" the part. I would recommend calling them at 1-800-334-9200. It was pretty painless opening a case and they made the effort to call me once a week to keep me informed. Being 13k miles outside warranty I had to foot the full $2500 repair bill... d'oh!

I was under the impression the et unit restarts the engine without engaging the starter

I was (kind of) under the same impression. I know they advertise it as a seamless & smooth Start/Stop. One thing for sure, most folks (driving any brand) dislike Start/Stop.

I have a neighbor who bought RAM 1500 with eTorque, and he had so many eTorque problems, they took the truck back under my state Lemon Law (Rhode Island). My current Ram 1500 (5.7L 2019 Longhorn 5th Gen), has no eTorque, nor would I ever buy a RAM with eTorque.

OP, good luck in your case. (y)

Add me to the list of MGU failures, or should I say soon-to-be failures. Whining sound coming from the unit itself. I'm at 88k miles so past the factory warranty. I do have an extended warranty though I always anticipate a battle. If it does go through, it seems the part shortage is extreme. I'm so disappointed with Ram on this issue. Even if it all gets fixed I'll feel like I'm driving around a ticking time bomb.

Jeez you guys are making me nervous. I’m at 72,000. Just had a new engine after 6 months of ownership and now u guys have me worried about etorque. I love the truck but starting to miss my 2015 tundra never had any issues

At least if your at 72 you are still covered by the federal emissions warranty which is 8 years 80k. You have to remind the dealer about it if it comes up. But yea I’m super disappointed with etorque. I didn’t want it to begin with but it’s what was available when I was shopping around

i wish ET was more reliable but i think the percentage of failures is relatively low. now the lack of availably on MGU's is ridiculous

Yes the availability of getting a unit is a big issue, if you can rebuild it thats the way i would go or look at junkyards. Most issues on here have been bearing failures. I have the etorque , i will hit 8 years before i ever hit 80k . I was thinking about buying a new ram with Hurricane but im not sure about long term reliabilty will that need something rebuilt at 80k miles like the turbos ? I keep.my trucks for along time i cant afford to trade in every few years.

not to kick the hornets nest but ALOT of guys just throw away low mileage truck's because they want the latest and greatest. a few months ago dude here traded in his paid off 20k mile limited for a tungsten i guess not having a payment or massive depreciation was killing him LOL. 100k mi 10 year is a good selling point for me if was in the market. however i will be keeping my non ET hemi for the foreseeable future. i'm shooting for high mileage bragging rights.........
