Transmission fluid change - Pan??

I have about 56,000 on my truck. Some of these miles are with towing and some at higher speed, 75+. I know the stock pan has a filter built in but is there a pan made that has a seperate filter, so it can be changed without a new pan? If you know which pan it is, please provide part number. Also, if you have changed the pan and fluid yourself, was it difficult? Getting a little old but can still change the oil when I want to. Thanks.

Ive serviced my Durango with 8HP70 several times. The only trans pan with a separate filter Im aware of are a Dorman (265850) and a Autotecnica brand. After seeing the Dorman in person and knowing the reputation of the parts they make, I wasnt putting that in my vehicle. I bit the bullet and got a real Mopar pan online. After changing the pan with filter at 50k, I decided to just do drain and fills every 25k until I reach 100k. Its an easy job overall. Id recommend finding the process on youtube before you start the job just to familiarize yourself.
 
I am looking to change my transmission filter as well and understand that the pan and filter are one part, yet when I go to purchase the pan I see they sell the filter separately. How so if they are one piece? Also I see another filter in the schematic that looks like the screw on type. What parts do I actually need if using Mopar parts aside from the fluid? Part numbers would be appreciated if possible. 3154.jpg

Might want to watch few videos on You tube about changing the pan and fluid.
Blauparts... has a pretty decent one IIRC.

Not worth it to replace with another plastic pan. If you’re gonna spend that much money may as well get an aluminum one that you can change the filter later.

What do you recommend that clears the cross over pipe ?

Don’t have a specific one. Are you saying you can’t find one that fits? I’ve found them with a quick search that says they are for the hurricane engine. So without test fitting one I would have to assume they fit just fine. Have you experienced otherwise.

There have been some post discussing the subject matter. Some had found out that all of them do not clear the cross over exhaust with the 5.7 hemi.

Dorman 265-850 Transmission Pan With Drain Plug, Gasket And Bolts Compatible with Select Models (OE FIX)​

While it’s not a particularly hard job, you’ll probably be glad it’s finished. You may end up with some exhaust burns along the way. I was able to complete it by lifting the back end of the tranny in lieu of disengaging the Y-pipe but I’ll probably do it differently next time. A perfect time to do it would be if and when you change your exhaust manifolds or convert to shorties. Nothings ever easy. Especially when you have an outdoor garage on a hillside. Lol. But, Amsoil ATF seems to add a little kick to my drivetrain. These trucks are crazy fast. Addictive!

I'm just buying the fluid and parts, I pay a mechanic friend to install everything for me. I just ordered the dorman plastic replacement, my truck just turned 80,000 and I likely won't own it when it needs its next servicing. I probably should have did it last year as a pull a decent sized travel trailer in the summer but I hope to get a new one next winter or spring. Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate it.

I used an aftermarket Dorman pan on my 2018 couple years ago, transmission developed a significant 'whine', which I attributed to the filter. Replaced with an OEM pan, noise went away. Coincidence? Not sure, but will not make that choice again...
 
I think it is important to make sure the transmission pan is level when filling the transmission after pan replacement. On 4th gen RAMs, in order to accomplish this, the rear wheels need to be jacked up 8-9 inches off the ground in order to get the transmission pan level. I did a pan replacement using PPE large aluminum pan on a couple 4th gen RAMs, have not done this job on a 5th gen, yet. Otherwise, you may be underfilling transmission with all four wheels on level ground. Check out the ramforum.com website for more information, those guys have been doing this for long time.

The transmission service procedure in ALLdataDiy calls for the truck to be level.

After changing the pan/filter/fluid on my wife's 8HP70 (2018 Grand Cherokee with 5.7), using Mopar pan, hers had what she called a "fake supercharger whine." At the time, I had a TRX, and the supercharger whine was the closest thing we could compare it to. That is very similar to the Ram 1500 transmissions.

I've figured out that if I put the vehicle sideways on my slanted driveway, with the passenger wheels on basic ramps, it will take just about exactly the right amount of fluid cold that it will following the complicated warm fill procedure. She was shy about a quart of fluid, adding that stopped the whine.
