Hey ya'll,

I'm looking for your recommendations on good quality dashcams and how you did the install.
After seeing all the issues people are having with batteries (for lots of other reasons), I feel a little gun shy to install one and end up with a dead battery.
I'm in a 2025 Limited and have had no issues with anything so far (knock on wood).

I have seen those. Wondering about real world experience and quality.

I've had the Viofo A119 v3 for a few years now and the picture quality is great.

I only pull video when I need to, so I don't need all the tech that some of these give. I use it for the purposes of protection when driving, so...

the fitcam x will be the best option as it sits dead center and does not impact your use of hard sunshades (like covercraft). it also pulls power from the wiring harness to the mirror, so no hiding wires required. (yeah, some other brands have that option as well, but does not sit dead center and impact your use of sunshades.

I have a viofo A119 or something for my M3 and that's because fitcam didn't have option for that car at the time (and I didn't know about fitcam until almost 2 years after I put the Viofo in there).

Picture quality, both are good.
ease of installation, and this is coming from someone who gets paid to install these things, go with fitcam.

if you're worried about draining battery, disable parking mode and you'll be fine. Good thing about Fitcam is if you just splice the power from the mirror using the connector given in the box, you won't have to worry about it. Using others that get power from fuse box, you will need to find the ign fuse and wire both batt and ign wires for the dash cam to the ign fuse, then find your ground. not hard to do, but for sure requires more time.

one brand i'd avoid at all cost is vantrue, with the models that use mini usb. those cables are THICCC and makes hiding wire a royal pain in the rear.

Good write up, I appreciate that. I think Fitcam is what I will probably go with for the reasons you mentioned. Will have to wait for the holidays to be over first.

Fitcam’s are popular on many vehicles because of the integrated look. If aesthetics and low price are the most important thing for you, then it’s a good choice. If you read their reviews, many people do have problems with them though. Not sure if this is true for Rams, but on other brand forums I’m on I do see many people complain about the functionality and video quality. Many people have issues where it just stops recording and no notification to let you know there’s an issue.

Go to dashcamtalk to research dashcams. Also, look for videos on YouTube channels for Vortex Radar and Safe Drive Solutions. Those resources will help you find the best option for your needs.

I have the Viofo A329s two channel dash cam in another vehicle that I’m very happy with. I’m considering the same for the Ram. But since I park the Ram outside, I’m also considering the Thinkware U3000 Pro. It has the best parking mode protection using radar to detect motion and start recording. I’m not as familiar with Blackvue dashcams, but I always hear great things about them as well.

The Viofo and Thinkware I mention are two of the most highly rated dashcams you can get. Yes, they are more expensive, but I’m more concerned with actual performance than aesthetics.

What I did was visit each dashcam's YouTube channel to see both day and night video quality.

Regarding battery issues, I have both front and rear full-time recording; the system draws 220 milliamperes. I drive my vehicle a few times each week, so battery consumption has not been an issue. If I were to let the truck sit unused longer, I would switch the recording system so it starts recording only when the G sensor is activated.
