Going to the dealership this afternoon. We will likely come home with a new Limited for the wife with the 3.0L I6 Hurricane HO Twin Turbo. The literature says it can run on 87 octane fuel if not used for towing and high performance. Is this true? My wife is 58 years old. She does have a heavy foot, but not a 540 hp heavy foot. So I'm hoping 87 octane is okay. Please let me know before we slap down the price of a small home for this thing.

just an FYI Thats not correct, the owners manual states 91 octane or higher for the high output engines. 87 is safe for the standard output engines. I would do what the manual says... I love my limited if you have the money spend it on what you guys like

Good to know. I don't have a manual yet and was just going off what I found online for the HO engine. (y)

Found this article on the question. While the high-output version calls for premium fuel, the chief engineer for this truck says it runs fine (albeit less powerfully) on 87 octane.

“The engine is really going to operate at its potential with premium fuel,” Killian says. “But it [will have] no problem running, and the typical driver will certainly find very good performance on regular 87 octane fuel."

Wondering if any other members are doing this?

Good point. Surely no dealer, or ram itself, would dispute the Edmunds article should a decision arise concerning warranty coverage of an HO truck run on 87 octane.

Found a copy of the manual online. I believe this is the primary point. The engineer is likely correct. However, the warranty needs to be considered. The manual is more definitive on this than I imagined. No allowance is made for 87 octane fuel in the HO. Looks like 91 octane will be the answer for all situations. This is yet another reason to wait and get another Hemi truck when they return in 2026 models.

I see nothing there which says you can run anything but 91 octane in the HO. In fact, the last sentence for the HO says "The use of 91 or higher octane premium gasoline is required in this engine.". Not recommended, but required. It's the SO that you can use 87 octane according to the manual.

It’ll “run” on most anything, as they have to design it to do so. People put all kinds of gas into these engines without thought. However, the HO should get 91+. It’ll pull a lot of timing and have lower fuel economy on 87. Even the SO doesn’t like 87 much. It likes 89+.

You have arrived at the correct answer, at least as far as warranty is concerned. The engineer is also very likely correct.

91+ octane. There is no debate about that on the HO motor.

The sticker on my Limited was $90K. I think only the Limited, Tungsten, and RHO models can even be had with the HO motor?

Who pays that much for a truck and then balks at putting the fuel that is even recommended, much less required?

And how much difference does it really make? Let's say you drive an average of 1500 miles per month (i.e. 18K a year). And Regular is $2.75 and Premium is $3.65 a gallon (around here, anyway).

And the SO gets 22 and the HO gets 18 - just to make up some maybe numbers.

That is:

SO - 68 gallons = $187.50 a month
HO - 83 gallons = $304 a month

That's an extra $117 a month for gas. If you drive 18K miles a year.

With the truck costing that much and insurance costing what it costs for these trucks, is $117 a month a dealbreaker?

If you don't drive that much, then the difference is even less, obviously.

I don't know. There are a LOT of variables in how much gas is going to cost someone. But, the HO is so awesome, the cost of gas was just not even a consideration when I bought mine. It is what it is.

I'm willing to pay to play. :)

I will say, though, that I am still surprised that the higher trims only offer the HO motor. It really seems like there are probably plenty of people who would buy (for example) a Limited and be perfectly fine to get it with the SST SO motor. And maybe even prefer it.

It seems like RAM would give that option. The HO motor IS awesome, but it also is a bit ... excessive (to SOME people's tastes). :D

Agreed. If you buy a vehicle, understand the long term cost. I've had my Limited since August 2024, I've bought 1,005.10 gallons of fuel.

So, premium (93 octane) costs me an average of $3.85 a gallon over the time I've owned the vehicle with a total fuel cost of $3,864.82. If I had had 87 octane, which has an average rating in my area of around $3.06 cents. The same amount of fuel at 87 vs 93, would save me $789 over 10 months or about $79/month...or $2.70 per day. IMHO, the 540hp is worth that all day long :)

Fisrt off if she has a heavy foot make sure she has the HO truck pointed the right direction before she hits the pedal...this truck will take off on you very quickly...LOL
Our gas cap clearly indicates 91 octane to be used.
as for the gas unitl warranty is completed I would not run 87 ..they will look at the pistons and tell you no warranty as you didnt use the recommended octane.

If it didn't require Premium, it would also get better mileage - a la the SST SO. So, the savings would be even bigger than that. You'd use cheaper gas AND less of it.

I've had my truck for about 3 weeks and I'm due to fill up today, which will break the 100 gallon mark for me.

Worth it all day long. :D

From what I've seen I don't see many SO's getting better than 17-19mpg on here with more than one trip under their belt.
