Hurricane Gas mileage

there is only so much energy in a gallon of gasoline so taking energy = HP into account all things being equal a 400hp 4 cylinder a 400hp 6 and a 400hp 8 will get similar MPG'S....... the 420hp hurricane was never going to do any better than the hemi mpg wise and these truck's are pushing almost 3 tons gvw. they actually do pretty well.
i'm 56 back in the day a Chevelle SS396 with the same hp as a hurricane weighed less was a beast to drive and got like 10 mpg on a good day. we used to say we could pass anything but a gas station.....

Haha well said. I will add that when it comes to forced induction things do change. Throw into the equation that the Hurricane is a tiny 3.0 and it gets interesting. It is possible to get better milage in the right conditions (low load) but on the flip side heavy loads = boost and boost drinks fuel. I find under normal throttle the Hurricane does get slightly better milage than the hemi. Drive like an 85 year old headed to church and it can actually get much better than the hemi, drive it like its opening day at the track and that thing can suck fuel like no hemi 5.7 I’ve ever owned.

I recently took a 230 mile road trip all highway keeping it at a steady 70 mph using 93 octane fuel getting 19.6 mpg hand calculated.
Prior to that doing all city short drives it was 16.5 mpg.

2025 - first 600 miles 3.0 s/o 3.55's Reg fuel.
17-18 around town.
21-22 on the highway unloaded.
Will be towing 2k M/c trailer next week - will update.

Does your truck recommend 91 octane or higher? What do you actually use? I have tried all octanes, mostly because of price, and I haven't really monitored mileage. I'm at about 7000 miles now so maybe I will check it.

For the 3.0 SO, the manual says:
This engine is designed to meet all emissions requirements, and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance, when using high-quality unleaded regular gasoline having an octane rating of 87, as specified by the (R+M)/2 method. The use of 91 or higher octane premium gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance. This increase in performance is most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load conditions such as while towing.

I'm at about 2,000 miles. Very little highway yet, and mostly rural driving. I live in an area with a lot of hills. I've towed a small trailer a few times, but only maybe 100 miles. I'm currently at 13.6 mpg, and amazingly hand calculated matches what the truck says. I've been using 93 octane b/c it's by far the cheapest premium fuel when I buy it at BJ's.

Is anyone getting close to the epa rating of 19mpg city and 24 mpg highway. I have been close on the city at 17mpg but on the highway it drops to 15 mpg. This was a big deal to me and buying this new 2025 Ram. Also having some misfire issues but the dealership says they can’t duplicate and no fault codes.
I just put my first full tank highway test on my new 2025 ram rebel. Love the truck , but came out of a 2021 powerboost platinum that got combined milage of 20. this one seems to be running15-16, mostly highway !! So, I'm guessing I should be losing 2-3 mpg because of 39 gears and off road tires, but I'm nowhere near 20 mpg on the highway.again, my overall appears to be 15 ! Too bad, because otherwise a great truck.

Wasn't that Ford rated at 24mpg? Seems like getting 20 was a greater loss than you're seeing on the Ram. How many miles on the Ram? I routinely get 17mpg+. And since you're seeing similar drops on both your vehicles, I think the driver's right foot may be the reason :)

LOWRMPG
"Just around15,000 miles and 17.7mpg - ask me about my zero issues because I drive frequently, and fast"

Nice to read something positive !!

Howdy folks. I wish I'd taken photos now (and I certainly will when I make the trip again next week), but I got 23.5 mpg in my 2025 1500 Laramie with 2300 miles on it driving about 320 miles from Iowa to Michigan with a passenger and light payload. On the way back I got 20.9, but I was driving into a relatively strong headwind with big gusts up into the 45 mph range. I tend to get very close to the EPA estimated mpg despite having the 22" inch wheels from the night edition package.

During the week, I rarely drive on the highway. Doing almost nothing but city driving I get 17.7 mpg. I admit I am an extremely conservative driver most of the time, and I time most of the stoplights in my commute and tend to try to keep some momentum to roll through them.

P.S. Gas mileage was HORRID during the break-in period. I think I didn't get break 15 mpg before around ~750 miles if I recall correctly.

EDIT: I have the 3.55 axle ratio option and use 93 octane from Costco.
