Windshield on crack

Safelight is coming to the house tomorrow to replace my windshield and I want to last. Isn't there some kind of protection film that can be installed on the outside? Does anyone have some real world experience?

No. I've never heard of that.

In most states you cannot legally put film on the windshield. THBS, aftermarket glass may be less prone to chips and cracks than OEM glass. I have had this experience in the past with some other makes.

But you may be able to ceramic coat the windshield using a glass coating.. no clue if it’ll help just with chips in general

I was pulling my camper across west Texas to Louisiana and something big hit my windshield. It looks like it was a meteor from the size of the damage, idk. I just heard a loud bang and I wasn't close to any cars. Also my speed was about 63mph.

2 5th gens both were chipped /cracked and the guys at work have had issues. they say the oem glass is prone to it, rumor has it that the safelight aftermarket glass is better quality. for some reason i don't doubt that.

I'd be surprised, Safelite is well known to use the cheapest glass they can get. Been a long time ago, but they had to replace the windshield in my 2000 Dakota four times because the glass cracked during install. Was the same guy coming out to do it each time. The final time, they used PPG glass vs the standard cheap glass, and I still have that same windshield in the truck.

As for factory windshield, I have had four chips in mine repaired/glued l. All within the first two years of ownership. I havent had any new chips in the last three years. And I drive the truck more now than I did during the first two years I had it.

They do offer windshield PPF, however they aren't perfect, hard to apply and easy to scratch especially if you use your wipers a lot. Just google Windshield PPF and you should find a few products and installers.

I usually avoid windshield hits by staying in the fast lane as long as possible, the first two lanes are rock magnets, the 3rd one is better but will still get hit occasionally, but rarely get a hit on the fast lane. Almost six years with my current windshield and no bad hits yet, knock on wood.

Yeah, I'll never use them again. Had too many issues. And they had to replace my windshield right after install because of a defect.

My ceramic/PPF guy released a video on FB about this product…when I asked about it… he said his experience is it does scratch fairly easy with wipers due to dust and other crap that …ta da… lands on your windshield. He uses it in pleasure/weekend cars like high end sports cars that don’t get driven as often, don’t want to replace an expensive windshield.

LITTLEREBEL, look up a company called Ikon Rockclear.
They are a coating, but it’s much, MUCH thicker than ceramic and does offer scratch protection, whereas ceramic does not.
I don’t know if it’s windshield approved, but…it may be better than a PPF film in the end…

I had the windshield replaced first thing this morning without any issues besides the surprise 40.00 disposel fee. He also told me that all aftermarket windsheilds are the same and theres no differance in the quality. IDK

There is definitely difference in quality between brands of glass.

Talking to any actual automotive glass shop. The local one I use will only install PPG glass. Unless specified when placing work order, Safelite will use the cheapest glass they can get, that fits your vehicle.

OEM vs Aftermarket Windshield Replacement

Technically speaking, the only OE (Original Equipment) glass that your vehicle will ever have is the one it comes with from the factory. A replacement windshield from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is what makes that windshield an OEM replacement.
