Woke up to hear the dang tick.

GND…I’m not trying to pour salt on the wounds… promise I’m not. And I’m sorry for your luck.
This…is the exact reason I buy extended warranties.
Should I have to? No. Do I like it? No. Do I hope to use it? Nope.
Have they saved me money overall on my last two trucks, my 08 and 15? Yep.
Unlikely to have a failure like this at under 40K miles. That’s crazy.
But it’s mechanical, and can happen… nothing worse than not being able to trust a vehicle.

Something to think about for next time. I know a lot of people think it’s a waste…etc.
I try not to chance fate…

Who do you recommend for an extended warranty? If I get a new vehicle should I go through the dealer/manufacturer for that? I never used to trust extended warranties for appliances either or feel I needed them, but we seem to go through appliances like water now in our home so I always buy them now for appliances. I am definitely thinking about adding an extended warranty to a new vehicle if I purchase a new one.

I am sorry to hear of this. One of the real challenges in car ownership is calling the ball so to speak as to when a dump a car due to reliability / cost issues. Our 2020 has been OK, but last year we had the rear cab window leak - repaired under warranty but drama in getting the part in less than two months (not acceptable). Just recently we had a wire harness issue with the LF wheel that caused ABS/traction control idiot lights. Two trips to the dealer later, and a lot of drama /potential dishonesty on the first visit regarding whether the truck had a Mopar warranty (it does) and then slimy behavior about coverage (covered after too much back and forth) and the truck appears repaired. We have the 8/85 only because I have had bad luck over the years but if the trend continues of one relatively major issue each year, we will get rid of the truck at warranty expiration time. I have found that the best indicator of future reliability and problems is the vehicles’s track record when you own it - it ain’t going to get better with age.

Long way of saying I agree with the original poster approach - repair it and then get rid of it. Carmax offers the best value in my area. Good luck.

Do not get a dealer specific warranty. Wait 2 1/2 years or close to the 36k whatever it is end of the manufacturer warranty and then get a genuine Mopar warranty, or whatever vehicle you buy. If you do get something right out of the gate, which, from my experience is not worth it because a lot can change in 3 years and nobody is making vehicles that last anymore, then make sure it's a genuine warranty. Dealership specific ones are a scam and they line their pockets with them. You can get quotes for pretty much every genuine extended warranty by poking around online for a bit, usually on whatever forum of the vehicle you own, and for RAM/FORD's it's Granger for the quotes. They don't even need to be in your state and they are up front about the amount they make on them, which I think is less than 5%.

Crazy world we live in for sure, because 6 years ago I was vocally against warranties. Now, I'd never keep a vehicle beyond the factory warranty without getting an extended. As stated earlier, no salt on the wound here, just hope this helps you in the future.

Personally, I'd just get rid of the truck. You are going to shell out easily over $5k for that rebuild, probably quite a bit more. Take that and apply it to a new downpayment and in 3 years an extended warranty you can pay month by month through someone like BudCo on and consider it cheap insurance that you don't have to come fully out of pocket for ever again.

Thank you for your post. Forgot all about Carmax, will have to check them out.

Read the contract. It will tell you if you can get out and how. If you financed the warranty, the refund will probably go to the lender as a principal payment.

You might want to price the truck on Caravan both with an engine noise & without. I have an Expedition with the cam phaser issue and to fix is $3K+. Fixed only gets me $600 more. Guess which way I am going. They are a dealer and I am disclosing the noise.

We might me driving this for at least the next couple of months. I do not feel comfortable driving this the way it was. I already told them to do the fix and do not feel like a should just limp along until I pull the trigger.

One other thought: have you taken a run at the dealer for goodwill repair? Stellantis may surprise you. Tell them you like the truck, you want to stay a Ram customer but this kind of failure shouldn’t happen, and ask for them to help. Worst thing that happens is they say no, but maybe since you are not far out of warranty by time and with the low mileage they may pick up a portion. You can still dump it of course but it is cheaper to get it to saleable condition. Just a thought. Good luck with it.

The ram dealerships here in the area are horrible. I have been to many of the ones in the area and ran into many problems. Had one damage my truck, they agreed to do the repairs. Then when the wife and I picked up the vehicle, the service manager got into are faces (massive dude) and bitched at us. When I returned home I got a call from ram cares and the agent said we are to never return (funny thing I never raised my voice with them or did anything to justify his response). I talked another local resident here that bought his vehicle at that dealer and had a similar situation at the same dealership and would never step back in it. I loved my ram when it worked right, but I have had many serious issues with the dealership network in my local area. I had a previous 2019 ram before this one. The dealership about an hour away in which I bought my first ram, destroyed the paint on my first vehicle. They had a guy with very little experience detail my truck before taking ownership. I viewed the truck many times that day on signing the papers (I was there most of the day and saw the truck many times in the sun). Finally after their paint buffer is done (it is now dark), they hand me the keys and off I go. The next morning, I pulled the truck out of the garage and it looks like it had been keyed. Every piece of metal, and I mean every piece; had massive scratches in it that you could get your finger nail into. Down into the paint and past the clear coat. Even the dang roof. I was pissed so I called them and explained the issue. They took the truck the back 3 or 4 times to try to fix. The buffer dude admitted to me he has not polished and buffed a car in something like a decade and never really did it that much. The head of the dealership wanted to repaint a brand new truck at that point. I told them no and wanted a new truck. After several days of back and forth, they gave me a new truck (the current one with the tick) and the head one told me he was just going to tell the manufacture it was damaged at the factory or in transit. lol he new his boy did it and lied about it. So if I got another, it would be my third one in 6.5 years. I love how they drive, but I have hated my experience so far with reliability and the local dealer network. I may reach out to Ram cares but at this point, I don't think they are going to care.

Update bleeding dollar dollar bills.... Saw surface wear on pushrods and lifters on 3 and 5. They owner and head tech has seen this before on those engines and advised me to get a whole new cylinder head for the left side instead of just fixing the rods and lifters. Don't have much choice but to fix it (don't want to drive it like this) and I trust this shop (most honest one I have ever been to, highly reviewed in my area). Going to fix but tempted to get rid of it. It would have to do this a year and a half outside of warranty and had quite a few issues during warranty time frame.
It might be worth contacting RAM support for some help. Many years ago I had a GMC PU that had a significant engine malfunction around the 45K mark. I was able to document correct maintenance and they started a file and ultimately took care of it. It might be a long shot in todays world but may be worth a shot.

That stinks. Sorry to hear it. Can I asked the general vicinity of where you live? I am in the DC metro area. Not terribly impressed with our local dealers either.

Just south the the NFL Draft about 20 minutes.

GND, while I don’t have the issue with crappy dealers, mine has always taken pretty good care of me… I always go factory Mopar Max Care.
Longer you wait…the more it costs.

There are several on here that sell the real deal factory warranty, it’s the cheapest when you buy it prior to 1 year, 12K miles.
From there it goes up. Pick your mileage and term.
On my 15, it was unlimited miles/years but ONLY for the original purchaser…
On my current 23 I went the max with 8 year, 125K miles. Gives me about tick over 15K miles a year until year 8, when I’ll be shopping again.

On my wife’s GC Overland we went 7 year, 85K miles, it was the best value and she is 100% remote work. And…we tend to take my truck :)

Good luck. A couple good dealers on here selling those warranties at or nearly at cost, and they’re factory to be honored at any dealership… no third party to wrangle with. What they cover is spelled out.

I sent a message to Ramcares on the website here today. I hope they at least help me with the repairs. I have a feeling that it won't matter, but it is worth a shot.

Thanks for your reply. Which dealers are doing this?

If you scroll down on the main forum page, there’s two.
Chrysler Factory Warranty’s and Zach@ Granger.

Both have websites to help you price and get an idea.

Personally, I would get a second opinion on it. If it quiets down after engine warms it's likely the manifold which is a very common issue and easy fix. I know you say you trust the shop, but it doesn't mean they are right. If you have a different dealer nearby or within an hour or two drive, take it to them if it's under warranty still. Shop may just be looking for a nice repair bill. Way too often the "hemi tick" is mistaken for lifters when it's just the manifold.

Really could be a simple problem and blown out of proportion by this shop
