Oil Udder XL

Tried again last month…and failed again. The Oil Udder did great at catching the initial oil spillage. But there’s just not enough room to get the filter out without turning it fully sideways, and that’s not possible until the Oil Udder is out of the way. So I’ll go back to the slightly-less-messy two-bag method.

I fully acknowledge that you all may have figured out a trick that I haven’t. Or am I experiencing a worst-case scenario with 4WD, air suspension, and Off-Road Group?
I have air suspension.
I put it on OR2, not sure if it matters.

On the way down to make it easier you can pop out a christmas tree push clip and bend some wires (they are sturdy).
Make sure you are wearing gloves so you don't bang up your hand, it is a tight fit but you can get it down in the normal upside down position even without popping out the clip (I left my clip not connected as the cables are tight anyways)

It is even harder if you use an SRT filter like me, I had to upgrade to the XXL version as the XL was almost the exact size of the oil filter, meaning it was useless except as a grip.

I use a hose on the Udder to drain into my pan and after slightly dropping down a bit I pour the excess oil out of the filter with a slight tip and then remove everything together.

Yeah, I put a 1.5' long piece of vinyl tubing on mine. I use the rubber plug that comes with the Oil Udder to plug the end of the vinyl tubing when I'm maneuvering the filter clear of the steering rack.

I have not used my udder or my fumoto yet because I just installed the fumoto last oil change. I only played with it a bit to test it.

I was looking forward to using that combo on my next oil change. I usually have to have the filter horizontal to remove it as well and I use the smaller Fram ultra synthetic so I guess we'll see what club I end up in LOL

I still got 90% on oil meter so it will be a bit.

What size Udder do you use?

I had a hose attached and used it for the initial drain. But you can't fully drain the oil until you've fully removed the filter (some gets trapped above the filter, in addition to that which sits inside), and you've got to practically fold up the oil udder to get enough clearance to do that. There's very little "extra" space for both the body of the oil udder AND the oil filter itself to share. The result is that even with a hose attached, oil spills out of the folds of the oil udder. I found it very cumbersome, and the magnet is worthless when you can't keep the filter and udder aligned. It just adds stiffness that doesn't help in such a small space.

Keep in mind that I have a 4WD truck. Even with my air suspension fully raised and the truck on Rhino ramps (which allows me to sit on the floor between the axle and bumper and reach straight in to access the filter), I had no luck. The oil udder has a clever design that works if you have adequate access to a filter from directly (or close to directly) underneath, and that might be the case for 2WD trucks, but it was a waste of money for me.

The only other possibility would be to get the oil udder in position and then stab a hole in the oil filter before removal. It would be tight to get access to the filter to do that while the oil udder is in place, but (theoretically) doing so would allow the oil both inside the filter and trapped above it to flow down. I just don't see this being any easier than using Ziplock bags, which (while a little messy) fit the tiny space around the filter so much better.
Had the same experience. Finally had a mess free oil change after combining the ziplock bags and poking hole in filter with sharpened Philips head screwdriver. Poked a hole near top of first bag. Worked screwdriver into bottom of filter but at the higher end. Let that drain, then turned filter 180 so now hole is at the lower end. Let that drain. Quite a bit of oil came out. I also put a puppy pad over the components under filter. Eased the first bag out and put second bag over filter. Spun filter out, dropped that in second bag. No mess

I can mostly do mine drip free. I added a Fumoto valve and drain kit. I like that because I can drain directly into my 5 gallon waste oil pail and not get a drain pan dirty. Added one to my woman’s Civic as well for that perk.

I read earlier that someone couldn’t turn the filter over until the udder is out. I can turn mine over with the udder in place just fine. I run a big drain tube from the udder to the 5 gallon pail.

The only real drips I get are when removing the udder after the filter is out.

Crazy how 0 regard for was given to the whole oil change procedure on these trucks but it is what it is. I get use out of the udder on my boats as well (the filters make a monster mess in the bilge).

I also use the udder. I go from the front to twist the filter off and leave the udder in place underneath. I don't even touch it until it's time to pull the filter down. I use a metal filter wrench for this application. Also attached a hose to it. At first I thought it wouldn't work, but same as a bag, you just have to be careful. The hardest part to any of these methods is the removal. Just terrible placement all around. Same as others, again, I got my Fumoto valve up there so the next oil change will be nice and easy.

At this point I'm just glad we still have a dipstick. Just saying.

One hose to the Oil Udder and another to the Fumoto Valve. Both drain into a 5 gallon waste jug. Easy Peasy.

I bought one. Worked great until I had to drop the filter/funnel down and out of the truck. It wouldn't come out without turning it and dumping hot oil all over the place and making the same mess.

Has anyone tried using the Tempest EZ Drain. It's for aviation filters of 3 1/2 inch. The Mopar oil filter is 3 inches. Not sure there would be enough room to fit it in the tight space of the oi filter but something similar would seem to work well.

not sure it is worth 53 dollars

I used mine on a 2019 Ram 1500 4x4, and until the last oil change, it was working just fine. I just had to move slowly while moving it through the maze to get it clear and then dumped into the oil drain pan. But last oil change, I must have been in a rush, and I got oil everywhere. Geez. I think I would have been better off just pulling the filter off with nothing under it and letting it splash all over. I'll slow down next time and hopefully go back to good results. It isn't something you want to move quickly.

My biggest issue with it is that once the oil starts flowing, you can't use it to grip the filter. It just spins around the oily filter. It would be nice if the inside gripped it a bit better so I could just rotate the Udder and completely unscrew the filter with it inside.
