Paint defect

So I just got my truck back from the dealer for the 3rd brake light leak. After doing a thorough inspection for damage I found a paint defect under the passenger side tail light. I'm not sure if they did it or not, but the paint is cracking from an internal mini dent. Almost looks like something sharp from the inside of the panel either hit it or is currently against it. The mark is raised and is definitely not from an external object. I have an open case with a FCA specialist due to my water leak so when she calls I will bring it up. I want it documented so that if it spreads in the future, they will take care of the repair. For now I think some clear coat should hopefully stop any corrosion, but I don't want to do that until the dealer can take a look at it. This truck is only 5 months old. Anyone else have a similar problem on their paint?

I have a similar ding on the Right bed side panel. The paint is not cracked, and it's only noticeable at certain angles, and being a white truck helps hide it further. The Rambox could be removed, and PDR could most likely eliminate it, but I'm going to leave it as is. Sad we have things like this on expensive vehicles.

I was washing my truck today noticed this. How TF does this make it out of the factory?? I also have several defects/runs in the clear coat.

I've realized Ram has terrible quality control. I have another large defect on my driver door near the roof line under the clear. I've decided to live with that one even though the dealer agreed to fix it. But since it's not at eye level I rarely see it. Didn't want to risk a repaint repair that could potentially not match or be worse quality. The new defect I found concerns me more because of the cracks. IMG_20191231_123745.jpg

Its amazing that there are not more trucks with paint defects, considering they push 1500 or so units a day out of the plant. Still, for what we paid, it's not right. My prior 4th Gen Sport had 34 paint defects that I corrected; the worst being on the roof, where the paint guns "spit" just behind the windshield. There wasn't much I could do there, other than wet sand / touch up with clear. On a positive note; I never had one issue mechanically in 6 years of ownership; hopefully my 5th Gen will be the same.

Are paint defects part of the 3yr 36k warranty?? I never looked - but just curious if anyone knew off top of your head.

My 2020 rebel has runs at the door edges, not super noticeable. In my old age i have decided to live with them. if the deal resprayed it, they would end up removing the factory paint, so i will just call it good.

Yes i payed a ton of money for this thing, but to be honest, i am okay with not having perfection. But i am not trying to make everyone else, think they shouldn't complain to the dealer to get there fixed.

My 2020 Rebel has a run on the cab between passenger window and rear window. Dealer said they would fix but I decided not to break the factory paint. It's not that noticeable. Should it have been caught at the factory? ABSOLUTELY! I still love my truck. I hope that I continue loving it.

A lot of car company’s have terrible quality control, particularly when it comes to paint. Jump over to other car/truck forums and you’ll see countless complaints. GM just built a Corvette paint facility for $439 million, on top of an already invested $135 million, and their paint is still no bueno.

I have a few of those. I never did anything about them as I didn’t want to have the factory paint disturbed. They are down low so not easy to see. I see them when cleaning the truck but they are otherwise not noticeable.

Paint defects are typical from any manufacturer. This would/should technically be covered.

They do, more then anyone on here knows. Even more then dealers know, lol. With that said, DS(4th Gen) Rams had the worst of the worst defects

Yes. Paint and surface rust should be 3/36, or whatever the current warranty parameters are. Perforation(rust through from the inside out) is/was covered under 5yr, 100k Warranty. But you want to ask yourself if the defect is worth breaking the factory paint. No matter what anyone says, aftermarket paint/paint repair is NOT as good as a factory paint job.

I think that they must paint these outside as I also have several dust spots on my new truck. Two on the hood and a couple on the sides and one spot on the roof. Very poor quality control.

Not outside, but the plant is old, and large, and dirt control is limited. They don't have the time to fix every paint defect. While expensive, these are not typically $100k+ trucks and they are massed produced. Ive been on the repairing end, the factory end and the corporate end of paint and paint repairs. Unless youre driving a $250k vehicle, youre going to have paint defects. Each vehicle will have a varying degree of defects, just the nature of production.

Not to mention the orange peel appearance

Orange peel is a mofo, sooo many contributing factors.
Orange peel usually occurs in the clear and as long as there is enough clear, it can easily be fixed without breaking the factory paint.

I must have lucked out. I have only found one very unnoticeable defect on my black truck which is actually quite amazing.

Same, I've washed mine and ceramic coated it and haven't found any defects, and I freely admit I'm pretty anal about that kind of stuff.

For over 20 yrs I've owned black Silverado's. Bought a black RAM and the paint is ****. Just my kids leaning against the bed with a zipper to reach something inside has scratched it. Never had that problem with the GMs. But besides that, the RAM is a far superior vehicle to the Silverado's I've owned.

I found two paint defects on the same panel, you can only see them if you get up close.

Yeah I can attest to the fragility of this paint. Someone leaned against the bed to help load a tree and all he had on was a t-shirt and somehow the paint scratched. Luckily some light scratch remover took it out.

I ordered my truck new. It spent like 3 extra weeks in the quality control/inspection/whatever step at the factory. It also supposedly went through quality control and a wash/detail at the dealer.

I was in a rush when I picked it up and when looking it over the next day saw a black piece of tape stuck to my black fender next to a small painted dent.

When I pulled it off I found BARE METAL underneath. They had marked a dent with tape, never fixed it, and spray painted over dent and the marker tape. To add insult to injury, the first thing the dealer service writer did was blame me and say it didnt happen at the factory.
After my WTH look and some raised voices they sent it off for a week to be fixed.
They should take the word quality out of all of their inspection

And the paint job has several small paint imperfections but I dont trust them to not make it worse.
