Front Skid Plate

I removed my Air Dam last night and I noticed there is no protection from loose rocks on the road under my truck. The engine is completely unprotected!!!!

Does anyone have a part number or suggestion for a basic cheap skid to protect my engine? Check out the image of it wide open.

There’s a lot of choices out there . If you’re planning to go off roading you’ll want steel , if you’ll never be off roading you can get away with just a plastic cover for cheap .

The interesting thing is, I looked up an under body video of a rebel and it is just as open as my Big Horn. So odd the best Off Road Ram has to offer still doesn't have engine protection underneath. I am unsure if they even sell a factory plastic cover for these.

What do others with the ORP look like?

Yeah I'm not impressed with the Rebel skid plate. My Pro4X skid plate on my Titan (off-road trim) went from the bumper to the trans plate. My entire engine was completely protected. I think Desert Dawg may have had a steel one fabricated.

That Dethloff skid plate is nice, but it's not what we're after. We're looking for something coming back from the front bumper that protects the engine bay. If I lift the front end of the truck I can sit up underneath the truck between the radiator and "skid plate" on my Rebel.

With the air suspension, that's a great spot to sit and have easy access to the oil filter! But it doesn't exactly provide splash protection for the front of the engine.

Exactly. It was really nice when I was fighting the filter for my first change, but I'd really like some protection there.

there is nothing on my Off Road, presumably the same as the rebel and big horn

I reached out to Marcus at Dethloff MFG and asked him to look at producing something to fill the void between the front bumper and the crossmember, said he is pretty busy these days but would look at it the next time a 5th gen ram was in his shop.

New to the forum but just got done throwing a skid plate on the front. I too didn't like the idea of not even having a splash shield up front and couldn't find anything aftermarket. I made some cardboard templates and brought it into a local steel supply/industrial fab shop and had a plate cut from 16 ga steel and bent to my specs. It mounts flush to the bumper and crossmember. The factory plate bolts on top. Total cost was under $100 including paint and hardware.

I don't know if you checked this before installing, but it would be interesting to know if you see any adverse effect on engine temperatures with that plate installed...especially in "stop and go" on a summer afternoon.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on temps in the short term. 103 out today and no issues.

I should have mentioned it's for a '20 1500 Lonestar (Big horn). The plate started out as a 27" x 28" sheet. Its 27" across at the bumper and tapers to 19" at the crossmember. Excuse the crude drawing...my big template with the numbers got trashed.
