Power sidestep retracting delay.

I could have sworn that I started a thread about a year ago regarding an issue that I encounter randomly with my power sidesteps. I searched my content and could not find the post. I wanted to see if there was a software update that resolved the issue.

Anyway, sometimes my power sidestep does not retract right away after I get in the truck, start the truck and begin to drive away. When I'm a bit down the road, I can then hear it retract. Probably when it hits a timeout or mph limit.

Does anyone else have this issue and if so, is there a flash to fix it?

I'm afraid I'm going to snag the deployed sidestep on a curb someday.

Mine does it too occasionally, but not often enough for me to worry about it...yet.

My delays seem to be getting worse. I have a static sound in a rear speaker as well and have unplugged the battery to reset things. No change to either.

It's funny that you mention the static sound. I can hear that in my left (driver) rear speaker as well.

I also noticed that the loudness of the static is not affected by the gain (volume) control.

I have to stop reading this forum. Just started working a deal on a 2020 Laramie Longhorn (72K list) and posts like these make me want to keep my Honda! :)

I have noticed this at times also and I think it is related to the safety feature on these that they won't retract if they sense any weight on them. I have noticed that if I shut the door and start driving that the running boards don't retract right away until I am on a straight away and no significant bumps. I think the sensor is thinking there is weight on the running board and this causes the delay in retracting.

I have a $70K Longhorn. It put me through hell and back the first year of ownership. The dealer has $15,000 of parts into it before the last repair of replacing the rear differential! Assembly quality on mine was abysmal.

But..... Over the weekend, I test drove both (2019 F150 ) Raptor and Limited. Let me say, these Rams are built so so much better.

Just going over bumps in the F150's compared to my 2019 Longhorn was a night and day difference in NVH.

The Rams are just world's above Ford in construction worthiness!

Just going over railroad tracks for instance, my Ram felt so much more rigid. It was night and day.

My Longhorn was so much quieter and smoother riding than the Limited F150. Night and day. No comparison!

Niwvif FCA could just up the assembly quality, we'd have it made. The ram design is world class. They just need quality to back it up.

In the meantime, I'll keep getting things fixed on my Longhorn until all the factory slop issues are gone. It'll be worth it in the end!

Buy your Longhorn and just pray you get a good one! It's the luck of the draw as far as build quality goes. A shame, but true.

Compared to anything currently available, the Ram will take the lead!

Good to know. The Platinum diesel 150 was what I set out to buy, but at the price point it's just blahhhh. Nothing exciting about it. Tired exterior and interior, tech is ok, but...didn't excite me at all. Sitting in the Ram this morning with my 21 yr old daughter we both kept saying how nice it was, how comfy it was and how we both prefer the Longhorn "Cowboy" interior over the Limited interior. Just feels so warm and inviting.

I hope I get a good one....I don't tolerate problems well at this price point!

Good luck with yours.

Good luck! You'll love the Longhorn. I got the black and new saddle interior because I wanted natural wood over the black wood in the Limited. The Longhorn is just gorgeous!

I have a service appointment tomorrow AM to deal with 7 items that have popped up in the first 3000 miles some of which i noticed at pre-delivery inspection. Service advisor seems to think some will be resolved with software updates.

My truck came off the showroom floor. The saleswoman who connected the negative ground didn't tighten it all the way and I only noticed this after 2000 miles when I spent an afternoon getting familiar with my rig. Hopefully that ground issue didn't fry something.

These are complex machines built by humans and all machines need to be calibrated. All in all I don't have any regrets and compared to my boss’s king ranch and my coworkers’ GMC the Ram’s interior takes the cake and the ride is superior. While I miss my 3rd gen cummins, this is an incredibly luxurious and super capable truck.

Hi all,

I certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you do move forward with addressing this with your dealer, please be sure to let us know via PM. We would like to have this documented, as well as connect you with a case manager who can work alongside your dealer to ensure that all potential solutions are explored.

@My1stHemi - Please be sure to keep us updated on your dealer's findings. If we can be of any additional assistance as you are working with your dealer, we would be more than happy to escalate a case on your behalf.

Mark,

Can you help us with this? My truck is at the dealer now and there is no software update available to correct the issue.

Please have FCA look into this.

Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you. Have had no major issues, except the electrical gremlins with USB connectivity and other stuff not working randomly, and dealer just replacing battery last week on my 9500 mile truck. Frustrating for sure.

On the other hand, the ride, luxury, HEMI reliability, and overall comfort more than make up for it. Just hoping this mythical Q4 UConnect update that's supposed to fix all these issues is released soon.

Cheers,

Hello Mark
Note: I had OEM power steps on another manufacturers truck and they always retracted within 3 seconds of closing the door. Until an instance when the Dealer disconnected the truck battery. Somehow the module that controls the power steps setting became either damaged or just simply lost its setting. This was Not a software or a reprogramming issue. The Dealer had to replace that module to resolve the issue and the power steps retracted upon door close at 3 seconds. Note the default max. setting was 45 or 60 seconds, I can’t remember which, but the steps will pickup/retract into the stored position.

So just my 2cents, as our steps are not staying deployed, just delayed to the default maximum time setting. So if you ask me, it’s the power step module that lost its settings. This scenario is possible only if your Truck battery has been disconnected! But in RAM’s case, my issue is intermittent, in my previous Truck, it was a constant issue, once the battery disconnect, interfered with the step module.

Honestly, I’m just not sure how much memory and processor power our Trucks have with all their computers, but it seems they just skip the step retraction, if they are overwhelmed?
