Left church to find that someone had drilled my tank to steal some gas. Wish they would have just asked! Now I’m left dealing with the repair. I plan on replacing the tank vs patching. Truck only has 4,000 miles on it and would rather not worry about leaks down the road. They used a 3/4 hole drillbit...I know because they forgot the drill...so one positive is they won’t be drilling anymore tanks today. I want to get opinions on the shavings that fell into the tank. Do you think it’s also worth replacing the filter/fuel pump?

that drill and bit is worth more than any gas they could have stole. thieves aren't very smart.

That sucks! It’s likely that any shavings that may have got into the tank would have been drained as the fuel was flowing out that size hole. That and you’re replacing the tank you should be fine.

It's like someone breaking into a car to steal the change in the center console, what a stupid thing to do, it doesn't even make financial sense to do it.

Drilling into a gas tank to steal some gas, especially with prices so low. That is crazy.

I wonder if the local police could get finger prints off of the drill?
That would be nice huh. Instead of a rubber hose and a few dollars of gas, they cause major damage. Turn a nuisance crime into a felony, dummies.

Stolen in all likelihood. Of course they were too damn stupid to know the drill could be sold for more than the little bit of fuel they obtained.

Law enforcement won't waste their time. They'll tell you to contact your insurance company and file a claim. Many depts allow online filing for certain crimes in order to obtain a report for insurance claims.

I hate freakin thieves

Unbelievable. Not a very smart move in their part.

Wow, hard to believe. I guess it might be a good idea to tape a couple 20 bills up there so they won't f'up your gas tank. Seems like a lot of trouble for very little gas. Kinda hope they spilled some gas in their eyes.

Did a little looking and found this. One 'real' suggestion was to put diesel badges on to discourage theft...and if they do steal the gas and put in their diesel auto it will screw them up.

They probably stole that too. Could've pawned it and made enough money to buy gas. But, that's why criminals are criminals - they are too stupid to do anything else!

Thanks everyone. My next decision is how to repair. Insurance covers this under vandalism. I have the option to take it anywhere I want. I can take it to the dealer, which I’m inclined to since I assume they know what they are doing on this type of repair. Or I can use the insurances body shop which would offer a lifetime warranty. But I don’t know how much experience body shops have with these types of claims.

Wow! Just wow! I did not even realize this was a thing... More used to seeing vinyl hose dangling out of a row of cars parked in the dark row of the parking garage.

Guess it's time to dig into a 5th Gen schematics and figure out how best to integrate a proximity sensor to trip the panic.

Sorry this happened to you! Especially while in church.

Dealer, to make it easy and no claims when the internals and modules are swapped over. Good luck!

Thief left the drill, but took the battery from the drill? I noticed there was no battery on the drill. Weird.

My thought is that they had a cordless pump that they swapped the battery to move the gas. And in their hurry forgot the drill.
