Ram Pulls The Plug On It’s All-Electric Ram 1500

Focus Shifts to Extended-Range Ram 1500 REV

Ram has made a significant change in direction. Stellantis has confirmed that it will no longer move forward with a fully electric pickup for the U.S. market. Instead, the company will put its weight behind its range extending electric vehicle (REEV) version of the Ram 1500, a truck it believes better fits the needs of American buyers.

The End of the Pure EV Ram –

For the past few years, Ram had been working on an all-electric pickup called the Ram 1500 REV. It was supposed to be the centerpiece of Stellantis’ electric push under former CEO Carlos Tavares. But delays kept piling up, and with rivals like Ford and GM struggling to move their own all-electric full-size trucks, the writing was on the wall.

Now, under new CEO Antonio Filosa, Stellantis is hitting the brakes. Filosa has been clear that his focus is on getting Stellantis back on track in North America. That means dialing back aggressive EV sales goals and concentrating on what customers are actually buying—trucks that combine new tech with tried-and-true capability.

Why Ram Walked Away –

The move isn’t just about sales numbers. Market demand for all-electric pickups has slowed, and the political climate has shifted too. With Congress removing federal EV tax credits and the Trump administration easing back emissions standards, Stellantis has more flexibility to avoid risky all-electric launches.

For Ram, it came down to a simple fact: buyers of half-ton pickups still want real-world usability—range, towing, and quick refueling. Current EV trucks just can’t hit all those marks yet, and Stellantis wasn’t willing to spend billions chasing a shrinking niche.

The Extended-Range Plan –

Instead of a battery-only model, Ram will push forward with its extended-range pickup. Formerly called the Ramcharger, the truck will now carry the Ram 1500 REV nameplate. This truck combines plug-in capability with a gas-powered generator that acts as a backup when the battery runs low.

The result? A truck with the advantages of electric driving—quiet operation, lower running costs, and the ability to charge at home—but without the limitations that scare off many truck buyers. Stellantis claims the extended-range REV will offer up to 690 miles of driving range and produce around 663 horsepower. For a half-ton truck, those numbers are hard to ignore.

What It Means for Truck Buyers –

For American truck owners, this means Ram isn’t forcing a pure EV into a market that isn’t ready. Instead, buyers will see a truck that offers cutting-edge technology while still meeting the demands of real-world work and family life. Towing a boat across the state or driving cross-country won’t require hunting for charging stations every couple of hours.

This decision also positions Ram differently from its rivals. Ford is pushing its Lightning, GM is pushing the Silverado EV, and Tesla is trying to make the Cybertruck stick. Ram is carving its own path—one that blends electric capability with gasoline reliability.

A Practical Pivot –

Some EV advocates will say Stellantis is backing down. But this isn’t about giving up—it’s about listening to the market. Truck buyers are cautious, and many aren’t willing to gamble on an all-electric rig that doesn’t fit their lifestyle. By moving forward with the extended-range Ram 1500 REV, Stellantis is betting it can win over those same buyers with a more practical solution.

Just a few years ago, automakers were racing to outdo each other with bold electric announcements. Now, reality is forcing adjustments. Ram’s move to cancel its all-electric truck may look like a retreat, but in truth, it could be the smartest play of all. If the Ram 1500 REV delivers on its promises, it might be the truck that bridges the gap between today’s buyers and tomorrow’s technology.
