Ram 1500 On Top In J.D. Power’s 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study For Large Light Duty Pickup Segment

Ram’s half-ton jumps from fourth to first in J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability results

The Ram 1500 has earned a major credibility win in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), ranking No. 1 in the Large Light Duty Pickup segment. The half-ton improved 13 points year over year, jumping from fourth to first in its segment, with gains tied to stronger long-term durability and real-world dependability.

J.D. Power’s annual VDS measures problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. Results are reported as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), with lower scores indicating better dependability.

Ram 1500 Hits No. 1 for Dependability

Dependability awards carry extra weight because they reflect ownership over time, not showroom impressions. For Ram, the 2026 result is a clear step forward, reinforced by a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty covering full-size trucks and vans.

Large Light Duty Pickup Rankings

J.D. Power’s segment results place the Ram 1500 at the top of the Large Light Duty Pickup category. The remaining highest-ranked models were:

  • First place – Ram 1500
  • Second place – Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • Third place (Tie) – Ford F-150
  • Third place (Tie) – GMC Sierra 1500

Key Takeaways From the 2026 VDS

Premium segment issues are rising again

After two years of stability, premium vehicles took a step backward. Problems increased 8 PP100 year over year to 217 PP100, the highest level since the study’s 2022 redesign. The gap between premium and mass market vehicles widened to 17 PP100, with premium brands underperforming mass market in seven of nine study categories. The biggest separation showed up in features/controls/displays (FCD) and driving experience, while premium makes performed better in only the powertrain and seats categories.

Software updates are common, but rarely feel meaningful

Vehicles are increasingly software-driven, and updates are now part of everyday ownership. In the past 12 months, 40% of owners received a software update. Only 27% said the update improved their vehicle, while 58% noticed no difference. Most updates, 63%, were delivered over the air, and those OTA updates were associated with a 2.5 PP100 increase in problems, a nearly 14% jump this year.

Phone Integration Is Still the Biggest Headache

If there’s a theme across the industry, it’s that connectivity remains messy. Four of the top five reported problems were tied to owner phone integration. For the third straight year, the single biggest issue was Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity at 8.9 PP100.

The most common related issues were:

  • Built-in Bluetooth systems: 5.5 PP100
  • Wireless charging pads: 5.1 PP100
  • OEM app connectivity: 4.7 PP100

Combined, these phone-related problems account for 24.2 PP100, nearly half of all infotainment category issues. Exterior concerns, including abnormal noises, also contributed to the overall rise in reported problems.

Electrified Powertrains Show More Problems

Powertrain type continues to shape long-term ownership experience. Plug-in hybrid vehicles remained the most problematic group in the study, increasing 39 PP100 year over year to 281 PP100. Battery electric vehicles and hybrids also moved in the wrong direction, each rising 14 PP100 to 237 PP100 and 213 PP100, respectively.

Gas-powered vehicles moved the other way, improving slightly by 2 PP100 to 198 PP100, making them the least problematic powertrain category in the study.

What’s New for the 2026 Ram 1500

Value and appearance are also back in focus with the return of the Ram 1500 Express and Black Express, offered across all cab and bed configurations. New exterior colors join the mix as well, including Molten Red Pearl-Coat, Silver Zynith, and Serrano-Green Metallic (late availability).
