Winterproof Step Bars?

While I obviously didn’t put it on my steps because I didn’t think of it, I used to use WD-40 Specialist Corrosion inhibitor on deck equipment when I was in the Coast Guard. If it can keep a steel machine gun mount from needing constant sanding and painting in a marine environment, it stands to reason it would protect some steps.

I had put Roam step sliders on my jeep. When I received them the coating looked thin and I could envision rust after a winter of salt and brine on the roads. I coated them with Raptor bed liner as a home kit. Good stuff and no rust.

If you can do spray on it would be best. I did roll on and it was a bit of a pain for the nooks and crannies. I wanted it to be extra rough though as they need constant touching up on a jeep as they get scraped up 4 wheeling. Doubtful this would be an issue on the Ram. You won't beat on it like a jeep.

Or as another poster said, take them to a Line-X place. Bedliner is good stuff.

I have an image of my mother-in-law coming outside for a ride in my truck, and seeing me as I'm crouching down by her step spraying it down with a can of WD-40.

(Yes, I know WD-40 manufactures a LOT of products, not all of which are lubricants. Just a funny...)

The only thing I do not like about the Westin HDX is the label is riveted on, seems like a logical place to rust at the rivet..if the plate is steel that is

Mine are made of stainless steel, but I paid extra for that version.

My biggest issue is most manufacturers don’t isolate the aluminum bars from the steel brackets and bolts and the reaction rots out the aluminum in about 5 years. My last set of steps totally rotted around all off the spots that the steel brackets contacted the aluminum bars. It wasn’t from lack of washing either as my vehicles get washed weekly, needed or not, and the rest of the bars looked pristine. Have had three different sets do this on past vehicles.

3 years and they are still looking great. No issues with winter salt.

That’s great to hear! And appreciate you responding . They’re a good $200 more but sounds like it’s worth it. I’m in Colorado and we get snow but no salt. Did you line-x or treat it any way or just kept them as they came?

No, I just installed them as they are. I thought about putting some Line-X or something like that on the actual silver steps but I never did that. They do remove with a couple of screws and then you can coat them or whatever. But they've held up really well.
