When buying the truck from another state, did you have to pay their state Sales tax?
Wondering if its like an Internet purchase. Not everyone collects sales tax.

Also, after purchasing out of state, do you then not have to pay in order to register the truck within your own state?
I though when transferring an out of state vehicle to your local state there was an extra fee based on the price of the vehicle.
If so, what is the cost of that?

Trying to factor in all costs. Only experience is purchasing within the same state.

With rare exceptions, you will have to pay the sales tax to your state regardless of where you purchase the vehicle. Your DMV will collect the tax when transferring the title to your name. Adjoining state dealers will often collect this tax and title/registration fees and pay the taxes to your state for you. If they don't collect and pay the tax on your behalf, you will have to pay them when you go to the DMV to transfer the title.

An example of a rare exception is a Florida law that says Florida citizens serving in the military and living out of state does not have to pay sales tax on a new vehicle purchased out of the state. I purchased probably 3 new vehicles without paying sales tax while a Florida resident stationed in Illinois. Other states may have similar or other exceptions.

Live in NYC, purchased in NJ, dealer collected and paid 8.875 NYC sales tax.
New York City has a total sales tax rate of 8.875%, which includes a 4.5% city tax, a 4% state tax, and a 0.375% Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge.

Mayor bloombucks raised it .5% and kept in a 1% (NYC fiscal crisis,1975 or so) that was to expire, also raised property taxes and water rates. Closed 6 firehouses May 25, 2003, lees than 2 years after 911. Mini Mike was not a good person and his billions couldn't buy him a presidential public image or personality, as distinguished from the inner self.

I live in PA and purchased from Mark Dodge in Louisiana. They collected the sales tax and handled the registration. My new license plate was mailed to me a few weeks later. I only had to sign a few documents and they handled everything. It was the most seamless vehicle purchase in my life.

ya....I know what you're thinking....the answer is no, there's no LEGAL way to not pay the sales tax of the state you are registering it in...lol

Same and I am n SC.

In Idaho, either the selling dealer will charge Idaho sales tax when you take delivery or you'll pay it in Idaho when you register it.

Same here as stevieb92. I live in PA and bought my new ‘23 Challenger a year ago from an CJDR dealership in Illinois. Had the car shipped. They required me ( although I did not want to do it ) to pay my PA sales tax for registration, plus title fees. I wanted to take care of this myself as I wanted to transfer the tag from my trade in. I had already renewed the registration, so I would only need to pay the sales tax and transfer fee.
I was also given a temporary tag so I could drive it here at home. Problem was it took 2 months till I ever received the new PA plate. My advice is to just take care of it yourself, but they may not let you do it. No big deal, it is the same in the end.

Ditto from NJ sale to NY registration, except new registration, needed the plates to enroll for EZ Pass and resident discounts.

Ok, thanks.
Didn't know the dealer would take care of everything for you.
Good to know.

Also wondered if an out of state dealer would give you 2 receipts.
One for what you actually paid and another to show your local DMV with a cheaper price to help save on taxes. 😛

It depends on the dealership and the state. In 2020 I bought a Wrangler Rubicon from a dealer in Michigan and they charged me the PA sales tax, but did not do the PA registration. The problem with that was when I returned to PA and went to register it, the jagoff at the DMV wanted me to pay the sales tax again. Even though it was clearly defined on the sales agreement that I already paid PA sales tax, he was insistent that I pay it... AGAIN. After a conference call with the dealership folks in Michigan, he finally said ok I acknowledge it was already paid. In contrast to Mark Dodge in Louisiana, I also paid the PA sales tax to Mark Dodge, but they also handled the PA registration through a PA title messenger service for me. I never stepped foot in the PA DMV to register my Ram Rebel. Some states have agreements set up where they send the sales tax directly to the state. Some don't. The PA DMV guy wasn't aware of that little fact. To me, that's an important part of your job to know.

CA resident and bought in Oregon. Taxes and reg were the same as if I had bought in CA. Plus I had to go to scales and get a weight cert, have it pass a smog test, etc. Same as any CA purchase but the dealership usually handles all that.

I paid taxes and reg to the DMV instead of the dealer, and had...10 or 14 days to go get paperwork finished and pay.

if you have a loan the dealer will collect sales tax for the state you will register in. you ll pay based on the state you live and will register it in not the state you buy it in. no fee for doing that. If , as I once did, payed cash, then they gave me a bill of sale that had No (zero) sales tax paid. when I registered it my state they then collected the tax.
