What's with the oil catch cans?

I'm not running one now on my Hemi, but I did run one on my 98 Trans AM. They were infamous for dirty intakes. It would sound like popcorn popping at WOT if it was dirty. Once I ran the catch can, problem eliminated. I used Mopar top end cleaner often prior to the can. I also used the seafoam method through the brake booster to keep her clean.
