The other day I activated the windshield washer and the wipers took a partial pass, paused for a second, then continued the wipe but then stuck in a random place. I could smell a faint electrical/burned smell in the cabin. After that, the wipers did not work regardless of position of the switch. The 30A fuse is fine, replaced just to be sure. The two relays seemed a bit unseated when I pressed on them- in place with solid contact just not bottomed out. Today I took it to the carwash and gently washed away the dirt under the hood as preparation before accessing the wiper motor. To my surprise the arms moved during the washing process, just about a quarter/third of the range of motion. The switch does not control (activate) the wipers at all BUT they do move a bit every time I open the door, regardless of the switch position (off through auto, low, high). If I leave the ignition in the acc or run position, the wipers will move a bit every time I open the door. The movement is very brief and happens immediately, as soon as I start to open the door but is not related to pulling the handle and it happens regardless of which door is opened. The motor seems to have good "strength" as it pushes against me when I hold the wiper arm and open the door. I can manually move the arms with reasonable force, as I would expect for the linkages involved. Adjusting wiper settings doesn't seem to change behavior at all.
All of the other obvious electrical things seem to work fine- windows, mirrors, seats, lights, stereo.
Test: The wipers move about 1/3 of a sweep in one direction when the vehicle is in Park or Reverse but only move about an inch when it is in Drive or Neutral.
Passenger side mirror was hit hard enough to crack the mirror about a year ago. Could the BLIS/heated mirror circuits be involved?
Perhaps a bad ground someplace? Doesn't(?) explain the burned circuit smell from the other day?
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
