Our new to us 2022 has some surface rust on the rear diff. I know its not a big deal, but I believe in oil-based undercoating (have been doing my 2017 since it was new)
I know Ill start with pressure washing everything (diff, body, frame, wheel wells, etc), but was curious if I should look at rust converter for the surface rust that might remain (rear diff, some light rust on certain welds, etc). And that brought me to wondering if I should convert it then paint it with something like POR 15 or Rust Bullet, and *then* oil undercoat over all of that. Slight side question - are th rust converter products "universal"? Rust Bullet makes one, NH Oil undercoating makes one. I would have a half gallon of either, dont need nearly that much, but could I use the RB stuff and just NH oil over the prepped metal? The SDS for both products is different (RB contains phosphoric acid plus "trade secret" detergent and rust inhibitor, NH just contains phosphoric acid)
Suggestions? Normally I just use the oil undercoating, but my 2017 never saw rust because I did it within a week of getting the truck and once a year ever since. It looks filthy underneath, but underneath all of that its pristine (Ive washed off a few spots through the years just to check)
TIA
