Trip, Trigger, Signal Wire for reverse lights using relay.

I'm wanting to add some reverse aux lights to the rear bumper. I've done this before with other vehicles but I'm concerned with possible trailer mode coming on or glitches/triggers?
What's the best source to go from and is there any other items I may need to work properly.

I spliced into the 7-way wiring, no issues.
If you do not want to go that route, then fuse tapping the 20 amp F12 to control a relay would be an other way to do it.

This is what I have on my Ram..works fantastically!
I also ran VD's extension harness back to the engine compartment to a relay setup then into the cab for a manual switch that I can use anytime I want..super slick!

I'm not sure I'm okay with putting holes in my dash yet. It does look clean though
I've bought the aux switches from RAM but I'm not ready for that headache yet. It makes my head hurt just looking at it.

You can run the whole setup that 1BADRAMLIMITED linked, without the extended harness also..very quick, simple connections under the rear bumper..I just chose to add the relay and dash switch so I could turn them on without the truck being in reverse for lighting up trailer while connecting, etc.
Drilling the dash was a bit nerve racking (I used a step drill bit to avoid cracking the plastic), but I needed a switch for my front light bar anyways, so took the plunge.

I'm going to say you are probably 100% correct. I'm not normal so I'll first have to try it on my own first even if I spend the same amount money doing it.
I may just be cheap but $90ish to turn on some extra lights just seems like a lot. Just soldering a wire to the existing harness just seems worth trying.
I also have a lot of solid Deutsch DPT connectors and I really want to use some more.

I have Amazon #3 patched in my setup (so two jumpers in a row) for a red tailgate light strip I'll be adding on the Ram soon as the weather warms up.

I installed a relay under the hood and grabbed my constant hot power from the fuse block. I then ran 16/3 shielded wire to the rear of the truck through the frame. One wire (white) went to the driver side tail light to grab the reverse signal, which thus triggers the relay. The other two wires were run to the pod lights, ground and positive, respectively. Pretty simple install if you're familiar with 12v wiring. This was on a 2026.
