We have a loaded 2021 Ram Rebel 5’-7” with hemi. The payload capacity on this truck is only1115 lbs. Take away my installed backflip mx4 tonneau cover (62 lbs) and me, my DW and dog that’s 425… leaves me with 628lbs capacity with no cargo. 628 lbs for a hitch weight. Our 26’ trailer we have a deposit on has a hitch weight dry of 690 lbs. It’s dry weight is 6845 and GVWR of 8495. Just a little concerned. Any advice is appreciated. Should I bail? Absolutely love this trailer and my truck was new last August. Can’t move up to a 2500.

690 lbs dry + 74 lbs (two 20lb propane tanks) + 40 lbs battery = 804 lbs dry

804 lbs + 100 lbs WDH = 904 lbs

checked a few too many boxes on the Ram to get down to 1,115 lbs payload

I was sent this by a know expert in the field. A good read. And answers many questions about payload. Hooks up about 600 hitch’s a year since 1970’s.

Sounds pretty close to my trailer, in weight anyway, 7900gvw, 600 hitch, 33’ overall length. We load er right up with 4 bikes, 3 kayaks, firewood, 2 kids, 1 wife, full water, takes half a day to unpack the sucker. Try as I might to limit what we take somehow we always end up taking pretty much every. damn. thing. we own.
Anyway I haven’t towed it yet with my rebel but my 2018 sport did just fine. I use an equal-I-zer brand hitch with 4 point sway control and its one handed driving even in wind. I would never promote towing outside your trucks capability/rating or beyond what you are comfortable with but there is a lot more to it than what the numbers in the brochure say. A properly loaded trailer with a good WDH set perfectly should never result in any *** puckering while driving😂…Pulling into the gas station yes

Here’s what an expert in this said in regards to my Rebel.

“The 1115 lb number is because of the beach ball offroad tires that the Rebel comes with. Take those off and put real tires on (which you were going to do sooner than later for towing stability anyway).

Your GVWR is 7100lb. Your front and rear GAWR are 8000lb when added together (which means that's your actual GVWR). That trucks max curb weight, with all options is 5372lb. That gives you a total capacity of between 1728lb and 2628lb (depending on which GVW you want to believe)

You just need better tires.”

Since investigating this further the tires are good for loading. Any concern is about the taller tire sidewalls which can affect stability with sway.

The only way to increase payload capacity is to remove weight.

You can dismiss pretty much everything this "expert" told you.

My camper weighs 8300 dry. Ive towed over 8k miles with my setup. When i has a curt sway hitch it was horrible. Couldn't go above 40mph. I ended up going to a hensley and changing a few other things out. Truck tows fine and runs perfectly straight down the highway. Never any iffy moments. Made it from ct to fl to tx and back multiple times now

Rebels tires are E rated and are more like the wheels on Fred Flintstones car than a beachball. They have a much higher weight rating than the truck will ever be able to use.
