Z Chains with the front adjusters/tensioners could very well mar your wheels. Another option are the self-adjusting ladder cables which don't have to use the adjusters/tentioners. However, they do recommend the adjusters, but the adjusters they use are designed in a way that shouldn't touch the face of your wheel.
