Thump and surging when put into drive

Cold start
Temp doesn't seem to matter.
Start engine and let it get to stable rpm 500-100
Move from Park to drive with foot on brake
Tried pausing in neutral and going quickly from P to D

When it gets into drive, the truck lurches forward.

If I keep foot in brake, there rpms bounce and the truck keeps trying to move forward.

When I finally give it gas, it's still kind of hesitates and surges until I get going. Drove for a bit, put in park and tried again and didn't do it

Anyone else experience this?

I personally don't have this problem, but I would have your dealer check your transmission fluid level. I asked them to check mine at 10,000 miles and I was "1 quart" low according to them. I was suspicious I was low due to the hesitation during the startup at a stop / start event at a light.

Mine does this after I pull out of the garage in the morning the first time I drive it. It'll lunge forward a little bit and the throttle seems to be more sensitive that first second I accelerate, then it feels pretty normal. I've debated taking it in to get looked at, but I don't know if it's enough to justify the time.

Hi barakutha & popcenator,

Please let us know via private message if you decide to have your dealers look into this. We would be more than happy to have your concerns documented and provide you with an additional layer of assistance as you work with your dealers.

I have the same issue. I feel like it's going to stall when I creep towards hooking up my hitch. Morning start ups are really noticeable.

I've been monitoring my gears lately by selecting 8 in the gear limiter. I'm also getting a rough 2-1 downshift at times I've noticed. Gears 1-3 kind of seem sloppy, mostly gears 1 and 2. I wonder if I need a TSB flash done.

I did the latest TCM update and it fixed the rough shifting in those lower gears. I believe there is a tsb for the PCM for the surge when shifting into drive when cold also.

I had the PCM flash done a long time ago for the hesitation and rough idle when cold; it fixed it and the problem hasn't returned. I just had the TCM flash done last week and WOW; the transmission slop and banging is gone. If your truck hasn't been flashed for PCM and /or TCM; I highly recommend it.

I assume these were the latest PCM and TCM flashes listed in the TSB thread in the forum?

How do you know what flashes your truck needs or had done?
I'm not sure there is a way to tell what flashes you have. What I have been doing is I check the TSB thread in this forum to see if any of the conditions match what I am experiencing. Then, when I take my truck in for service I use the wording in the TSB to explain my problem.

I've noticed that after putting the stock throttle body back and the stock intake back on, the shifting seems better. I'm going to see how it acts the next few days, but I have an appointment at the dealership on Wednesday morning. My luck will be that it'll act fine.

my truck does that too
in mornning startup only rpm goes from 500 to 700 and comes back to 500 every second for about 1 min , i think its a bad injector issue from my experience

Just got back from the dealership. Of course the receipt said they could not duplicate, but they flashed the latest PCM and TCM updates since I was on an old version and I could tell the difference immediately. So much better now. If you haven't gotten the updates, I would get them.

My 2020 Rebel does the exact thing. Called dealer and was told nothing can be done. It is annoying and dangerous. My daughter drive the truck the other day and was shocked when it jumped forward, scared her, not safe!
