Maybe some of you folks are new to limited slip axles, but the symptom is typical of clutch chatter due to insufficient friction modifier. The factory rear axle fill includes 4 ounces of friction modifier.

Best regards,

Not new to Limited Slip Axles; just new to a fairly new vehicle that does this. You shouldn't even need to worry about axle fluid until around 50k miles.

I agree, unless they didn't get enough modifier into the axle at the factory.

Thanks Dusty, the LSD is new to me. I would have thought the factory fill would be to spec and sufficient to avoid chatter...

Regardless, after the service department put more in, I have no more chatter. Did some uphill windy mountain roads this past weekend where it was the worst and hear nothing / felt nothing!

I'm not surprised. I cannot think of one time when hearing this complaint that it wasn't resolved by adding more friction modifier. Glad to hear the issue has been resolved.

Well, the Dealer said they couldn't duplicate it after having my truck for two days; even though I told them exactly what to do. So, I have a brand new bottle of MOPAR friction modifier in may garage for this weekend. The question is, should I just go ahead and change out all the fluid or just add the friction modifier? I have 22k on the truck right now. Thoughts?

I guess it's dependent on how much free time you have to change out the diff lubricant. I'm too fussy. It takes me a couple of hours.

If you just add the friction modifier and the issue goes away, you've proved the diagnostic.

Best regards,
Dusty

I am having this exact same issue. Truck had zero issues. Took it to dealer for first time in my life and paid $1400 for all these services including changed the rear diff fluid and they give it back to me and now I have major rear wheel shutter when turning from a stop and moving slowly. They had it for 3 weeks told it was my brakes so I paid to replace those and they changed a ton of parts in the rear diff assembly like bearings and such. They have now escalated with Chrysler and I am pissed because my truck was fine and now their telling me I might have to pay to replace the whole rear assembly. This is such a sham and feel taken advantage of. Don’t really know what to do at this point considering I’m already $2000 in.

My previous Ram with an LSD did this like clockwork every 30-40K miles. Replaced the diff fluid with Mobil 1 Syn Gear Lube LS 75W-140 synthetic and problem was gone, permanently

Audio files from a couple days before going to dealer and the day I picked it up. Dealer applied a TSB but did not fix the issue. It's back at the dealer now for further investigation.

I started having this problem at around 18,000 miles or so. By 20,000 miles it was doing it every time that I was accelerating from a stop and turning. In December I drained the rear differential and refilled with Valvoline Synpower 75W-140 Full Syntehtic Gear Oil. I did not add the MOPAR anti-friction modifier since the Valvoline already has antifriction modifiers. I have not experienced the problem since.

Mine does a minor form of this when I'm slowly turning with the wheel near full-lock on pavement. My truck has the e-locker, so no anti-spin rear diff. The one thing I noticed is that it only does it when in 4wd auto. Not sure if this is normal or not, but it's done it since new and hasn't gotten any worse. There is no noise associated with it, only a slight shudder mostly felt in the steering wheel. Not really a big deal since winter is about over and I won't have it in that mode for a few months. But it has me rethinking the statement in the manual that it's safe to use 4wd auto full-time (or something to that effect).

Hi all,

I apologize for the frustration on this concern. We would be more than willing to ensure that your experiences are formally documented and that you have the additional support of a customer care specialist who can work alongside both you and your dealer while in service.

We are always a private message away.

Mark, please private message me as I would like to take you up on your offer. I’m not having a lot of luck with the 2 different dealerships I have tried this far.

I had the same issue with my 2020 Ram EcoDiesel with the 3.92 rear end. The first trip to the dealer at 2500 miles and they added the friction modifier. It was a temporary fix as the issue returned at 7500 miles. The truck then broke down due to a faulty grounding bolt on the engine and while getting that fixed, I told them about the rear end shudder. This time, they tried to make it right and said the entire rear end needed to be rebuilt. Thank goodness for warranty because they said this is a 6k dollar repair. At 19k miles, the shudder is now back and is extremely prominent while in 4wd low. It literally sounds like the rear end is going to grind right off and the entire truck vibrates. I’ll be headed to the dealer yet again to hopefully get it resolved. Sorry to say that I will most likely not keep this truck, especially if the warranty runs out. I’m guessing with everyone on here experiencing the same issue that Ram has discovered they have major rear bed issues that will most likely effect their durability. I’ll keep everyone posted after another trip to the dealer. Besides the rear end, I’ve had the radio unit replaced and had to have the drivers side door adjusted 3 times due to wind noise. I really regret that Ram did not live up to expectations. Never thought a new truck would me so much grief...

Sometimes when I apply the gas lightly, I will feel a significant shudder/shake from the rear end from about 0-3 MPH or so. I can duplicate it when the truck has been recently started, in drive, 1 foot on the brake, and one foot barely on the gas, and modulating the brake to maintain 1-2 MPH while turning. It is a constant shake from the rear end or a shudder. It shakes the whole truck.....not violently, but notably....like running over some rumble strips in the road at lower speeds. Frequency is too fast to be U-Joints. When trying to duplicate it using the method above, it goes away when the wheel is straight, but progressively worse with decreasing radius while turning. Doing some digging, I learned that our anti-spin rear end is a clutch type. One theory of mine that seems to explain the symptoms would be that the clutches in the LSD rear end are chattering. (Cold clutches and fluid, tight radius turning, torque applied to rear end, making the clutches grip tighter and chatter against each other). I have also noticed that it is more pronounced when going uphill (more torque on the LSD clutches causing increased chatter) The only evidence against this is that I swear I have experienced it in a straight line once before. I do know that it happens primarily while turning, like when making a right hand turn from a stop at an intersection. Has anyone else experienced this?

When regular (non LSD) diff fluid is used in a clutch type LSD application, it will cause chatter around turns. Knowing this, I'm tempted to swap the diff fluid out with some synthetic with LSD modifier just to double check that it has the right fluid!
I have the exact same symptoms in my truck 2019 Ram2500 Tradesman. Dealer first told me it was loose wheel bearings in front axle, replaced them and problem persisted. Then they sampled the rear diff fluid and found metallic shards present. Replaced the spider gears in rear diff and it’s still happening, but not as bad as it was. They had my truck for almost a month and it’s still not fixed! On top of that it now pulls slightly left on the Highway, had them check the alignment and it still pulls left. It didn’t pull left when I brought it in to the dealership! They’re telling me it’s not pulling. I drive 50-60k miles a year, I know what pulling feels like. I’ve also noticed that the 4wd gear shifter is dancing around as I’m driving, never noticed that before. I’m disgusted. I’m gonna reach out to Ram on Monday. Truck has 37,000 miles on it. This should not be happening.

When I read your post I thought I wrote it... What you describe is exactly what my truck is doing, down to every word.

At first I thought maybe it was one of the clutches in the transmission, but like you said, when you straighten the steering wheel it goes away. I was going to take it to the dealer but I wanted to check it out further as I absolutely hate dealer techs trying to diagnose things and crawling all over my perfect truck.

I took my truck to a quiet parking lot and noticed I could easily duplicate the issue, and I could make it worse by placing the truck in reverse and ****ing the wheel all the way to one or the other direction and giving it gas. After doing all types of moves I found that it is either the axle clutches or the anti locking safety system. I'm almost positive it's the anti locking safety system over acting because it thinks its about to engage. Another thing I tried was, when the truck was doing it's chattering I switched the transmission in natural and the chattering stops (even with the wheels turned). I can also feel the chattering in the steering wheel so the electronic steering has my attention as a possible culprit as well.

The truck is smooth as butter going down the road, the steering is perfectly straight and no squeaks or issues whatsoever. I've owned a lot of trucks,(new) and I mean a lot. This truck is the smoothest most silky straight truck I've ever owned and there is nothing that compares. I've also owned cars over $100K that did not drive as smooth as this truck so I'm tempted to leave this issue alone until I find someone else like you (or others) that will identify the issue and find the proper adjustment. The all around truck performance is outstanding and I don't want to mess with something and end up screwing up the perfect smoothness. Please do let me know if you find something...
Anyway, yup, same on my truck...
It’s a long shot but did you ever diagnose? I am having the exact same issues.

I changed out the rear end oil today to see if that is the culprit. The oil was a little cloudy, like they got some water in it at the factory? Even if this is not the cause of the stuttering, glad to have the correct Mopar oil and additive for peace-of-mind…even at $24 a quart.
