This has been going on for a few months now. At the beginning of the pandemic, auto sales abruptly fell off a cliff while consumer/office electronics went up as people spent more time at home, bought more computers/monitors for WFH setups, etc. Most chipmakers had to shift production to cover that new demand. When auto sales picked back up the other new demand in consumer/office electronics didn't go away. This created a backlog for the chipmakers and were slow to add more capacity to cover this abrupt new demand (Can't blame them, no one could see the exact demand patterns coming and it takes time to create more capacity at a facility.) They are still catching up which is where the shortages are coming from.
