Ok, so oil change #2 today at 6600 miles at the dealer. Invoice has these two “strange” fees: Environmental fee and CC Electronic data storage fee. Guess they missed the “customer drank our coffee” fee…. When I asked, the “environmental fee” is the old “shop supplies”.
What a difference between states. The California Bureau of Auto Repair clamped down on that BS a few years ago. The Auto Repair Act specifies that work orders must be itemized. So some vague "shop supplies" charge won't cut it. Shops are certainly free to charge for cable ties or bolts or even brake parts cleaner, but they must be itemized. The environmental fee is supposed to be listed as waste oil disposal, or tire disposal or whatever, not some vague "environmental fee." Some shops were charging "electronic transmittal fee" for the smog check results. Nope, not allowed, since the customer can't opt out of it. Neither can the shop. So it is supposed to be built into the charge for the smog check.
Credit card surcharges are allowed, since the card issuers ding the shop at least 3%. Most shops build it into their hourly labor rate to avoid arguments at the cashier later.
Next time you go in, tell them you don't want electronic storage. See what happens.
