Fairly new here, so I apologize if this post is not where, how, or the way it should be posted.

This is my 4th Ram;

1st 2002 SLT w/360 magnum (bullet proof) except for the plastic dashboard and defrost covering defect.

2nd 2011 Larmie w/hemi 5.7 4x4 (cant say anything bad about this truck.

3rd 2015 Longhorn w/hemi 5.7 Ram box bed setup, also great truck except for the defective ABS module going out on me 3 times.

4th 2023 Larmie w/hemi etorque, most luxurious, most smooth ride, most silent cabin, most convenience tech features, largest interior crew cab ever, but I am frustrated with the OBDII security gateway access. The truck has no issues, 27K miles, no codes, no lights, drives and performs like a dream. I just want to be ready and capable for the inevitable, and be able to activate some features.

I own just about every tool that exist for car repairs and maintenance. I had just recently upgraded my Autel scanner to the MaxiSys MS906 Pro. I had it updated up til July 2025. So, I'm thinking I can take care of all my family's cars even if my subscription expires, like I have been doing for the past 15 years, WRONG!

It will scan my son's 2022 Honda accord, it will scan my wife's 2021 Buick Enclave, it will scan my daughters 2015 Cadilac SRX, and of course it will scan my 2001 Ford Econoline E250 cardo van, but it won't scan my NEW 5th GEN RAM, unbelievable!

I had the OBDII setup from Alpha for my 2015 Ram, it was the MX module, but it worked awesome. I was hoping it would help with this RAM, no luck. So, I purchased the MX+, downloaded the newest Alpha OBDII software, bought the bypass cable, and have had no luck communicating with my NEW truck or being able to scan all the modules or making any changes in the BCM. My Autel, using the bypass cable does not communicate with the modules either, gives an error message and says I need to re-activate my yearly subscription.

What am I doing wrong, please HELP. I'm on the second bypass cable, is there a specific cable only that works? Does the bypass cable only work for Alpha or will it work for my Autel also?

Thanks Serg

I'm really not looking to purchase more hardware/software and see many 5th Gen Ram enthusiasts here using and communicating with a bypass cable and the Alpha program, just need some clarity, as I have had no luck.

Best regards,

The only thing the MX+ does over the MX is add iOS support so you could use JScan or another iOS based app.

You should be able to read and clear (most) codes with any software/device that can talk to the OBD reader.

To WRITE changes, you need a licensed copy of AlfaOBD or JScan.

Have you updated the firmware in the MX/MX+?

I know you said you didn't want to buy anything else, but this is the one I use. Not a cable bypass, you just plug it in. Haven't had any issues with that plus a wireless OBD plug. Works fine with Torque Pro and AlfaOBD.

Look into AutoAuth your Autel should be compatible with autoauth.
This is the preferred method with Autel. I have the 906TS and it works fine with bypass cable and Auto Auth subscription. Since retiring from automotive, I prefer to use Alpha and the MX USB cable so I can connect directly to a Windows laptop.

Have you checked Youtube, to make sure you're making the correct selections on AlphaOBD? You should be able to with no issues. Many videos showing how to do thing with AlphaOBD.

My MX+ works fine with and with out the Chrysler 12+8 bypass cable. I would take a close look at the connectors (truck side), might have a contact that is not seated correctly.

Hi guys;

Thanks for all your support and kindness, been busy lately and haven't messed with the software or hardware since. I did subscribe to autoauth for my Autel MS906, but still need to address the expired subscription. Really don't want to spend $600 for a year subscription when my subscription just expired and everything is updated until June 2025 and all my vehicles at home are 2023 and below.

The AlphaOBD MX and MX+ had power but the bluetooth flashing light would not connect to my updated windows version of the most recent licensed Alpha program. I couldn't get past the bluetooth connection, so of course there was no communication to the trucks modules. I have the older Alpha program on a Andriod tablet, I'm going to try that hardware and program to see if I can link either bluetooth modules to that Andriod system.

I also ordered an inexpensive Z Automotive Security Gateway Bypass Module for 18-23 Dodge, Chrysler & Jeep

I am using my old Galaxy tab A 10.1, have not updated anything.

That's the bad fallback about Autel. It's MANDATORY that the tool have an active Autel subscription as well since it all goes thru their servers.

Call AutoAuth quick enough if your Autel subscription is expired and you don't plan to renew and they will issue a refund.
