Safe to use Unmarried Tazer DT?

Can I brick/damage/screw-up my truck if I use an unmarried Tazer DT and only use the "Live" functions?

I've read some stories about people that fat-fingered something on their Tazer DT which bricked their truck. I think those were "Vehicle" functions and I think the Tazer was married.

The only functions I want to use are in the "Live" functions menu, so I don't need to marry the Tazer DT? Can I brick/damage/screw-up my truck if I use an unmarried Tazer DT and only use the "Live" functions?

You stand little risk of bricking your BCM with the TazerDT, and most of those stories are from the TRX forum and trying to use the pin lock feature. There are no settings you can change that will hurt your truck, or can't reverse. So dont enable pin lock to and you will be fine, even when married

But yes, you can use it unmarried specifically for the live features

One of the features I want to use on the Live settings menu is the PIN lock. AFAIK, it doesn't need to be married to use PIN lock.

So using PIN lock, even unmarried on a non-TRX, can brick the BCM? Maybe I'm misunderstanding this.

It is possible. It either takes our the BCM or the RF hub. I personally don't use the pin lock feature for other reasons, but do use killbyfob.

I'm thinking of a situation where a thief breaks in, creates a key fob, starts the truck but the gas pedal is dead. So he finds the Tazer DT plugged in and disconnects it. Can he drive away then?

The instructions also seem to imply that ONLY the fob used to lock the truck will enable the gas pedal when the truck is unlocked, and that unlocking using a key or different fob (they mention proximity unlock, which I don't have) will not enable the gas pedal without entering the PIN code whether the PIN lock is enabled or not. This is why there are some who says it's not a true security feature, and even with killing the gas pedal it's a simple relearn procedure to get it back, that thieves can do just as fast as they make new fobs.

But yes, you need to knock the truck using the same key fob as you locked it with. It has caused me some issues with my truck when my wife would meet me somewhere and use her fob to get into the truck. Nothing that wasn't overcome with some locking and unlocking using the fobs. I've also had a few times where I get in the truck and accidentally bump the lock button on fob, and then the truck won't go when I try to drive. I mean, it will go, but only at idle.

At the same time, I don't want to make it a pain to drive my truck and have to do 100 different things just to drive! Just 1 or 2 things max and that's it. Flip kill switch and (maybe) enter a PIN code and go. But then when I lock it and walk away, I want it to be as inviting as a porcupine and have multiple trackers if somehow it does get taken.

Do you live in a high theft area? The only vehicles routinely stolen around me are Kias with the USB hack. Don't here about many 5th gen Rams getting stolen. Last I saw anyone mention was a 2nd Gen RAM.

I'm in Texas out away from downtown of a major city and it's pretty safe. But downtown specifically Ram is #1 most stolen. Half the Top 10 stolen vehicles downtown are trucks, and trucks are the top 4.

When I'm in church and hear the pastor say, "Pray for so-and-so, who just bought a brand new truck and was at Lowe's downtown and came out and it was stolen" and I've heard that more than once, that's why I'm doing what I can with my 2023 Ram 1500.

That said, I had a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 6.7L HD Turbo Diesel DRW in this area for 2 years with no security upgrades, and no one messed with it.

I'm going to be moving to the suburbs of another Texas city later this year, which is much higher in Mopar-everything stolen.

Comprehensive insurance is my #1 protection. But I don't want to go through the hassle of filing claims and finding another truck plus paying the cost difference. I like my truck. So I'm doing things to make it less inviting to thieves with several security and recovery upgrades.

Yeah, sounds like you need extra protection. ****ty there are so many lowlifes around who steal ****

Are you using your Tazer DT married or unmarried? Any Tazer settings you recommend for or against using?

I'm quite concerned about doing anything on the Tazer that could damage/brick my BCM or RF hub, even if it's a 1% chance.
 
I like what the Tazer KillByFob says it can do. But as others have said, the Tazer can be disconnected and the killed pedal can be re-learned.

I'm gonna test this out when I get my Tazer DT and see if I can unkill the pedal:

1. Tazer connected and KillByFob enabled
2. Lock truck from Fob #1. Pedal is killed.
3. Unlock truck with Fob #2. Start truck. Pedal should still be killed since not unlocked with Fob #1
4. Lock truck with Fob #2. Unlock truck with Fob #2. Is pedal unkilled?
[5.] Stop truck. Disconnect Tazer
[6.] Lock truck with Fob #2. Unlock truck with Fob #2. Is pedal unkilled?

I don't know if this would work, but I'm gonna try and see how easy it is to bypass the Tazer and unlock a killed pedal with a different Fob.

It seems like security for the truck is a multi-method approach. Even with an IGLA, you would still need a neutral cover plate to prevent a roll-away theft, and an old school kill switch is probably not a bad idea. Then you need GPS and non-GPS (because of jammers) trackers in case thieves get it somehow.

Hopefully with enough hoops to jump through, thieves would just move on.

Tazer over-writes the eeprom a million times with these “anti-theft” features, and that can ultimately end badly. At least, that’s how I interpret what I’ve seen and heard on the failures.
If you want rock-solid anti-theft without a bunch of hassle, bite the bullet and have IGLA installed. Then there’s no worrying about thieves. All you do is enter a PIN code after startup. Add Compustar for the deterrent aspect, and you’re covered from the minute they break the window.

I did have the Tazer married for a long time but after the last time I updated it I don't have it married I use the live settings pin-code,amber DRL's ,eng. start stop mostly. some people have had trouble with some settings in the 2022 and newer trucks my truck is a 2021 and works great.

Not sure. I have Compustar as well, and use that for remote start. Maybe @Air’d outSRT can answer that.
 
What does the IGLA + Compustar combo cost ya? Just ballpark is fine.
I’ll be honest- I don’t remember the actual price. I paid cash, and it was a lot. IGLA alone was a standard set price of $1200, but I forget what it was with Compustar added on. I didn’t opt for the drone add-on (that also requires a subscription). Maybe Josh (@Air’d outSRT) can weigh in here.
