I dont believe they tell you the average for the whole trip, i believe they are for a rolling 50 mile average.

I think that because when i take the kid to fall asleep i can hit 12.6mpg on 40 mile trip with a 2500mile trip readout. I average low 11s otherwise.

Good question. If a F150, you configure the display to update every XXX miles.

Had an opportunity to travel a distance without too many stops on Western New York roads, part including a section of I-390. The trip was two-way, included two stop lights, was a mix of 55 to 65 MPH. Vehicle was unloaded except for the driver and one bottle of Doctor Pepper. Weather was sunny and the temps were in the mid-forties. Not much wind, although my weather App said winds were out of the northwest at 9 MPH. Trip was south, then west, then a double-back. Filled the tank at the beginning and at the end of the 111.1 mile journey so as to get a hand calculation of fuel mileage. Used the same gas station and pump.

Onboard computer indicated 29.2 miles per gallon, hand calculation was 29.26 miles per gallon.

I averaged 24.8 from Wyoming to Illinois, 80mph in Wyoming and SD. 70 in Minnesota and Wisconsin . The trick was the 40+ mph tail wind. 18.7 Illinois to Wyoming same speeds, but with a headwind. Make sure you always drive with a tail wind, no matter where it takes you.
Like sailing!

And here I was thinking I'm the only guy here getting 24 mpg highway consistently lol.
Will be taking a 4 hour trip to AZ last week of December so it'll be interesting to see what I can get there and back on average..

Gas mileage threads are always very entertaining. I do appreciate all the sharing of statistics and find them very informative. I just find the obsession somewhat amusing.
The way I look at it is that I bought a 7000 lb truck powered by a 5.7 Hemi. I wasn't concerned about how many miles I can squeeze out of a tank of gas. I did drive a 1998 Ram Air Trans Am for 20 years. Had no idea how many miles I got per gallon. The car didn't have a computer to calculate and I never even thought about hand calculating. My guess is about 14 mpg. My 2020 Big Horn says 17.8 right now. I can live with that. I also turn MDS off around town. Use it on HWY. I think its a cool option for HWY. Just my opinion.

Some of you guys are awfully lucky. I have a 2021 1500 crew cab, 5.7L ecotorque, 3.92 gears, 20" wheels, 6.4 box and I can't get 17 mpg if I was coasting in neutral down hill all the way with a stiff tailwind!

Lots of guys stretch the truth about their actual mpg on here as well.
