I just had my truck repaired. 109,000 miles without a single issue then ignition coil went out. After that find out there is coolant leaking into the 4th cylinder, same that had the bad coil. Instead of getting a new gasket shop suggested to put in a sealant. Said the cost of doing the gasket would be too high and that I should consider selling the truck.

I hear you can buy rebuilt motors from Ram that come with a warranty. Wondering if it’s a good idea. Has anyone done this before? If so any suggestions or pros and cons of buying a rebuilt motor?

I don't see why it would be a bad idea if you're still happy with the truck. It's gonna cost you a lot more to replace the truck.

I’ve never replaced an engine. Seems like a really good option since the engine will have a new warranty. I’m just curious if people have had experiences where other things go wrong as a result of the engine change that are not covered under warranty.

I had to replace my 3.6 in the Grand Cherokee and they had 2 options which were about $200 difference if I remember. New with 1 year warranty unlimited mileage and reman with 3 year forget mileage. I went reman, then totaled it about 3 months later. The oil pressure solenoid decided to not kick up the pressure while on highway and ate the motor.

I think cost me $11K w/ labor in 2022

Are you planning to do the work yourself, or pay a shop to do the swap?

$11K? That’s double what I’m seeing online. I see motos can run between $4-6k depending on new or rebuilt and labor is another $1.5-2K. Going to call some shops and the dealer to get more accurate quotes. Did you go through a local shop or the dealer?

I went thru the dealer so no warranty issues to fight about. I asked a local shop about changing the oil pump ( before I knew it ate my motor ) and they wanted to charge me an arm n leg. Then proceed to tell me it might cost more because we've never done it before. PASS!!

they never done it before LOL, well at least they were honest about it.
the oil pump is actually not that hard of a job totally doable for me. in the right application the penstar 3.6 is a good motor IMO it's like the LS of V6's.

Being the Grand Cherokee makes doing the job slightly harder then say the Wrangler. Yeah, I was glad when he said he'd never done it, plus your lack of not doing the job shouldn't cost me more if book time is X amount of hours you're charging me. Plus the Dealership was comparable and I knew they would do it right. That's how I found out the engine ate itself with nice sparkly metal pieces.

No. I want the labor and parts to be warrantied.
Check to see what the warranty will be before making your decision. They are usually much shorter than the factory warranty, often as little as one year.
