I have a 2020 Rebel and we currently have a 27’ trailer . About 6500 pounds dry weight and a little over 700 tongue weight( according to specs. I have never weighed it) . Looking to get a newer trailer. I decided to try the CAT scale just to see what it would say. I have a few mods on my truck . Nothing to heavy, a full tank of gas, me and my son 17year old son. About 400 pounds total, some hunting and camping gear. About 150 pounds . CAT scale was total weight of 6460. If my GVW is 7100 , I only have 640 pounds before I’m overweight? How is that possible. Or am I missing something? I’m confused. No way I can put my wife and other kid in the truck and a trailer or anything.

It is possible. Some Rams have light payloads. Mine is 1730. Go here and put in your Vin https://www.ramtrucks.com/towing/towing-guide.html

Here is a recent weight for me. 3/4 tank with trailer and some gear. I still have some payload left, but it is tight.

What does the yellow sticker inside your driver side door jamb say your payload capacity is?

The Rebel (like the Power Wagon) was not intended to be a tow/haul vehicle and has a low payload rating compared to a lot of other models.

You are correct: 7100 - 6460 = 640 lbs of payload left

Looks like you also added heavier wheels & tires plus those side steps are heavy steel. Going back to stock would free up some weight there

Like @IvoryHemi said new wheels, lift, heavy side steps, I see lights on the front, anything else you've put in the truck (extra hitch, tow strap, trash, anything). It all adds up. If you put the 550 pounds you estimated with the 640, you're at 1190. If your truck is configured like mine, you started around 1500 pounds so you've got 300-350 pounds of "extra" from your mods/stuff/estimations.

Only partially true. It really depends more on options selected. My Rebel has a 1608# payload. Once you add things like tech packages, leather, safety systems, etc payload decreases quickly. That's true of any model, not just the Rebel.

Welcome to the world of modern 1500 pick-ups, their payloads can be rather low by simply the weight of options even before mods.

Rebel and almost all other half ton reality. Put all of the hunting and camping gear in the trailer and tow away. For anything over about 6500lbs towing most half tons are just at GVWR or overweight with just passengers and the tongue weight. Anytime you see a bed full of stuff and a trailer on a half ton there is a really high chance they are overloaded by 500-1000lbs.

I love my Rebel but, I don’t want to worry about it anymore. We plan to get rid of our bunkhouse trailer and upgrade to a bigger heavier trailer. Ordered a 2021 RAM 3500 longbed Limited . Should be here in about a month. Got a killer trade in deal.

Since you’re going longbed I’d strongly recommend going for the 50-gallon tank, only $295
