So a few weeks ago I scored a used OEM siding tool box on Craigslist. For my birthday my wife bought me the factory bed rails to complete the install.
When I got the box home I cleaned it and adjusted the latches as well as using a self etching primer to prep for rattle can bed liner coating.
First mod was to flip the bed rails so that I could remove the sliding tie-downs without being in the truck or so that I could have full access for the tool box to slide all the way to the back of the bed. This only involved drilling a few holes and relocating the brackets. Very easy mod.

My intention all along was to modify the tool box to slide past the end of the bed over the tailgate for easier access without having to reach over a fender or get into the bed. To accomplish this I purchased a pair of locking 24” HD drawer slides from a local Accuride distributor. Models 9308E L/R.

I then bought some new stainless 6mm pan head Allen bolts and affixed the drawer slide to the body of the box using the existing top hole from the factory bracket. I drilled a new hole in the center of the original bolt pattern and used this new hole to mount to the outer face of the drawer slide. This allowed me to drop the height of the tool box enough to clear the release handle on the tonneau cover.

All in all I am pretty happy with this setup as I can now keep my chainsaw and other man-sentials with me and I know they are more secure than simply hiding them under my tonneau. For reference a husqvarna chainsaw case fits inside. Just. I think FCA would do well to offer something like this from the factory.

So the “easy” mod didn’t work. I fabricated a cradle to hold the drawer slides, something that had some stability.
I ended up buying some 3/16” 3x3 a36 angle iron and cutting it down to fit the box. This thing is stout. Much improved. It took a few days to fit and fab in my free time but it was worth it.
It also gave me an excuse to buy a little flux welder too.

Can you list the draw slides used in this (and locking mechanism), Also What dimensions are the toolbox?
Fantastic mod! looking to do similar with the back of my bed to keep it under my cover and slide out when needed.

Do you have any pictures of the bed liner finish on the box? I've been considering this box, but my truck is all blacked out and think it would look stupid with a chrome box. Thanks.

I only sprayed bedliner (duplicolor) on the inside of the box to avoid aluminum oxide from rubbing off on everything put in the box. I've had a number of company work trucks over the years that had aluminum tool boxes and they all get wet inside and corrode which made a mess of anything I put in there.

I would hesitate to get a black tool box as I can't imagine how hot that would get in the sun. Even under my tonneau cover, this gets pretty hot to the touch.
