FCA: Sales jump 17% on Ram, Jeep demand; fleet volume grows

FCA was spurred by record results from Jeep and Ram. The Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee and Compass as well as the Ram 1500 all recorded November bests. The Chrysler and Fiat brands each fell more than 20 percent, while Alfa Romeo and Dodge delivered gains last month.

Brands: Alfa Romeo up 36%; Chrysler down 21%; Dodge up 15%; Fiat down 24 percent; Jeep up 12%; Ram up 44%

And again, Ram outsold Silverado for November; 52,056 vs. 49,859 (Chevy numbers from GMinsidenews.com forums)

There is a reason why GM changed their sales reports from monthly to quarterly and a big part has to do with those numbers I'm sure...

On a side note, per the text from the linked FCA press release, this is the first time I can ever recall 1500 sales broken out of the total Ram sales. I'm surprised FCA specifically called out 1500 sales figures here, since neither GM nor Ford call out their 1500/150 specific sales figures, providing sales figures for their entire Silverado/Sierra and F-Series lineups instead.

Ram brand sales rose 44 percent to a November record 57,970 vehicles. The previous record was 42,511 vehicles in November 2016. The Ram 1500 drove the performance as total sales climbed 59 percent to 37,637 vehicles for a new November record. The Ram 1500 and Ram brand also delivered record retail sales for November.

No, they all have broken them out when there's been a redesign. For instance, when GM introduced the Silverado as a build and not a trim level, it was only in the 1500 while there was also still a 1500 Classic C/K and all the heavier trucks were also still C/K. They reported it publicly just as FCA is doing.

Ah, I see where I got a bit mixed up. In the text of the press release, FCA called out Ram 1500 sales, but in the sales chart that shows sales by model they don't call out the specific model truck, just "Ram P/U."

From what I can see, scanning some sales figures press releases for GM and Ford, that's not even how they've been reporting them for at least the past few years. GM reports Silverado and Sierra sales without splitting out 1500 vs 2500, etc. Ditto with Ford F-Series sales.

In terms of specifically splitting out the redesign, that's not what Ram's doing here, either. They're lumping all 1500 sales together, both Classic and new gen 1500s.

Yes, Ram has been specifically mentioning 1500 sales numbers in their press releases for the last few months, once 1500 sales really started to take off. Historically we had to guess at Ram p/u sales split b/w light duty and HD. Now they are actually providing the numbers, which is cool (and no one else does).

They are clearly bragging about their success in the retail market, and they have every reason to.

I'd say it's the shot across the bows for GM and Ford, especially with Ford's decision on their truck focus and GM's rather stale design revision.

Unfortunately, this justifies the dip in the December rebates as well. Just good business.

I'm off work today and kinda bored, so I decided to run with a hypothetical, and completely baseless math experiment based for Q3 sales figures based on the numbers Ram has publicized... :geek::cool:

Ram 1500 sales were 69.1% of the total Ram truck sales volume for July, 73.7% for August, and 70.7% in September, with actual sales figures of 27,812, 36,798, and 36,658, respectively, for a 3Q sales volume of 101,268. Averaging that out, the 1500 comprised 71.2% of the Ram truck sales in 3Q.

Looking at the same statistic from another perspective, Ram has 5 other models in the Ram truck lineup, so clearly inaccurately assuming they all get the same percentage of sales, they each account for 5.8% of Ram sales

Baselessly applying that 71.2% and 5.8% sales percentages to Chevy and Ford, here's how those numbers look:
  • Chevy had 133,329 Silverado sales in 3Q. 71.2% of those sales equals 94,930.
    • Alternately, subtracting the 5.8% of sales each for the other 3 models in the Silverado lineup, the 1500 gets 82.6% of Silverado sales, or 110,130.
  • Ford had 227,880 F-Series sales in 3Q. 71.2% of those sales equals 162,250.
    • Alternately, subtracting the 5.8% of sales each for the other 6 models in the F-Series lineup, the F-150 gets 65.2% of F-Series sales, or 148,578.
Admittedly, this is all completely baseless speculation since GM and Ford don't share their individual truck model level sales stats like Ram does with the 1500, so the percentages are likely waaaaay off. If my speculation is anywhere near accurate, though, Ram could very well have already taken the #2 150/1500 spot from Chevy.

Your math may be fairly accurate. Ford has two plants pumping out F150s and only 1 for the Super Duties, not sure how many for the bigger F-series trucks.
