The dealer already had the pulse third brake light installed when I picked up my truck. He said they install them on all their vehicles. I also had to pay $299 for it. My question is when I googled it I found out that pulsating third brake lights are technically illegal. Thoughts on this ? Anyone ever been pulled over for this ?

Pure dealer profit, likely lying that they are installed in all sold vehicles.
Extremely unlikely that would be the reason you get pulled over. It is actually more noticeable, so not a bad thing.
It’s done, so I wouldn’t give it a second thought...

Try passing inspection.

You won’t

Inspection for what ? Like D.O.T. inspection?
I think he means your state inspection.

We don't have any emission inspections here in Minnesota, if that's what u mean. I can't think of any other inspection besides a D.O.T. if it was a commercial vehicle.

I wasn't referring to emissions inspections, but state safety inspections.

I can tell you that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rejected a petition for rulemaking from Mercedes-Benz to make these legal at the federal level. Of the two people I asked it appears that in some states only the the third brake light can be pulsating and only for a few flashes. A friend of mine says in New York State they are currently illegal, which doesn't surprise me since just about everything is illegal in New York State (unauthorized political statement).

I'd check your state laws to be sure.

Best regards,
Dusty

When I lived in VA, they were illegal and I had to remove mine after I relocated from PA. In FL, they are not an issue. The module can be had online for less than $10 and can be installed yourself in under 15 minutes. I sure hope you didn't pay $299, but got them to throw it in for free

The original federal law that was enacted for the 3rd brake light stated that it needed to operate the same as the other brake lights. Here's what NHTSA says about it.

Under the Federal regulations in the United States, motor vehicles must be manufactured so that the third brake light (or "center highmounted stop lamp" as we call it) and all other stop lamps are steady-burning when they are in use.

After the vehicle is sold, Federal law prohibits any manufacturer, dealer, distributor, or motor vehicle repair business from installing the sensor to modify the performance of the third brake light and cause it to flash.

However, Federal law does not prohibit the owner of the car from installing the sensor. In this circumstance, the law of the State in which the vehicle is operated must be consulted to determine whether a flashing third brake light is permissible.

I agree that they are annoying and a distraction. If the dealer installed it, they might be liable for breaking federal law.

Under the current political administration peaceful protest are allowed.

And if you live in NJ or use the toll roads hefty toll increases are also allowed.

I believe the tri state governors are evaluating charging for breathing. Someone informed them that humans need 19.5% O2 to breathe and since air contains 21% the additional 1.5% should be taxed. Probably consulting California at how to implement.

Or perhaps NJ is waiting to see how taxed marijuana sells compared to the current sales.
History lesson for gambling under government administration = Off Track Betting closed down in NY

Blame Dusty for getting me started. Sorry Dusty but living in NY it is never an individual's fault.
