Possible Hurricane misfire at cruising speed.

I have a 2025 Ram 1500 Laramie with the standard output huricane with 1700 miles. When I'm driving and the truck is in 7th or 8th gear and i put light pressure on the gas pedal to either maintain speed or slightly accelerate, I feel a studder. It's not constant. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. When I step on the gas harder or when I'm accelerating faster It goes away. I have no check engine light but it does feel like a misfire. Has anyone else had this problem. It started happening when I got about 1200 miles on it. Dealership keeps telling me if there was anything going on in the engine it would trigger a check engine light.

There have been a bunch of the Hurricanes with misfire, so that might be what you’re feeling.

However, what you describe is also a sensation that’s common on turbo’d motors. I had several Taurus SHO’s, and they did it, one really badly. Something to do with the watergate, IIRC. It’s a light studder in high gear under light throttle but some load (like going uphill). The sensation is exacerbated if going over a wavy/bumpy road. I can feel it just a hair in my 25 Ram.

I’m not saying that’s what you’re feeling …. just throwing it out there.

Not seeing a check engine light is no guarantee it's not misfiring like hell. In the unsuccessful attempts to fix my '25 laramie, one pcm update greatly raised the threshold for turning the check engine light on during misfires. The talk at the time was that because the misfire problem was so prevalent, people with strict emission inspections were failing with brand new trucks because the light kept coming on due to misfires. Sooo...just make it much harder for the light to come on. That was their solution at the time. As soon as I got one particular update the light would stay off until it had been misfiring for a lot longer than it used to take. Now, it didn't actually FIX anything, the truck still ran like crap, but it kept the light off for much longer.

I'm curious what fuel are you using regular or premium?

I got less than two tanks worth of driving from the truck. I don't know what the dealer put in for the first tank, probably 87. Second wad 88 octane 15% ethanol. That fuel is probably still in it, unless they refilled it. Truck has 1069 miles or so. I've owned it 9 months or so.

These engines run best on premium I've seen gains with ignition timing and holding boost longer using 93.
Direct Connection states Fuel Type: Premium and it's the same Standard Output CAT1 Hurricane engine in the RAM.

The users manual says this:

3.0L STANDARD OUTPUT ENGINE​

Do not use E-85 flex fuel or ethanol blends greater than 15% in this engine.

This engine is designed to meet all emissions requirements, and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance, when using high-quality unleaded regular gasoline having an octane rating of 87, as specified by the (R+M)/2 method. The use of 91 or higher octane premium gasoline will allow these engines to operate to optimal performance. This increase in performance is most noticeable in hot weather or under heavy load conditions such as while towing.

I'm sure it makes more power on higher octane. This truck can't reliably be driven across town. That is not because I'm only running the minimum recommended octane. Blaming 87 octane gas for the problems my truck has is akin to blaming an oil change with semi-synthetic oil in an engine recommending synthetic because the vehicle exploded and killed everybody in a 200 foot radius when the driver attempted to start the vehicle. That's an exaggeration, somewhat. You get what I'm saying I hope.

I get it there is obviously some mechanical/software issue going on there. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Same on my 2025 big horn SO. Feels more like the turbo wastegate barely opening and closing back quickly, which I’ve felt on turbo engines before. No codes on mine. I may pull the plugs at some point just to make sure they’re not fouled, but I think it’s wastegate-related. No big deal for me. Hopefully a future tune update takes care of it.

I use 89 too. Truck definitely prefers it; much better fuel economy and performance compared to 87. It did not affect the low-throttle acceleration stutter though. I’m pretty sure it’s an ECU thing, where Ram just needs to fix it with a software update. It doesn’t feel like anything dangerous. It’s more just an annoyance.

I checked all the bolts and parts on and near the turbo for anything loose or off. There was one wire clip on the front turbo that was loose and rubbing on the wastegate arm, potentially causing a binding under slight acceleration. I fixed it, but the stutter is still there sometimes. I’ll post a photo of the clip when I get a chance.

Oh, and on the gas thing, I tried 93 too. No noticeable change in stutter, fuel economy, or performance. Seems like the truck is looking for 89 or better for max performance.

Update on stutter: dealership loaded the latest applicable ECM / TCM updates on my ‘25 3.0 SO last week. Those updates removed almost all the issue. It drives soooo much smoother now under slight acceleration. Apparently those updates tuned it out as much as possible.
