Other camper shells that would fit a 5th gen?

I’m curious if anyone has successfully fit another camper shell onto a 5th gen Ram? I want to get one so I can bring my dog along. He’s a big dog and doesn’t fit in the quad cab with 2 kids seats in the back. I am a vendor for dealerships so I come across a lot of caps taken off trucks but haven’t found one yet. Got really close with a Silverado one the other day but it would have taken too many modifications to make it work.

Fiberglass canopies are too expensive these days. $3000 ?! No thanks. I paid $1800 for a 8’ leer canopy in 2008.
I’m planning on getting a softopper(~$800) if I don’t owe Uncle Sam too much in taxes this year.

Yeah I agree. I just dont really like the soft top look unless the truck is built out for the offroad look which mine is far from it for now.

That makes sense. Fiberglass canopies sure do look nice. Please share your findings if you find a cheaper alternative.

I just paid 2000 for a Leer. Adding all kinds of doo dads can up the price significantly.

I installed the Leer 100R. Pretty good fit except I get a little rubbing on the door and tailgate. I would recommend upgrading to the 100XR to solve that problem (nicer back door).AA6A48B4-29F5-4448-8E55-EB9E9FE65048.jpegAA6A48B4-29F5-4448-8E55-EB9E9FE65048.jpeg

Thats good to hear. I got a quote for an ARE on my truck for $2700 and my coworker just got one for his f150 and paid $3000 at the same shop. Ill try to find a Leer dealer.

Awesome man! I wonder if it would be the same story for a quad cab like mine?
I think they have fitment pretty well down. It will probably look great on a quad cab which is a great looking truck. I have teenagers so I had to go full crew. I’d recommend getting the dealer to guarantee good fitment. Like I said above, I’d also recommend getting the upgraded rear door. I’ve always had wool lined shells which keeps them from sweating. Lastly, I also recommend getting the fold down front window in the shell. This feature gives you access to keep both the truck cab and shell front window clean.

I went with the leer 100XR, added the headliner and the removable back window... cost $2500 out the door. The rear hatch unlocks with the truck fob.

I’m very happy with it so far. Had a Leer on my last truck (Tundra), the paint outlasted the paint on the truck.

Well, I wanted to try a different route this time and so I bought a Softopper this week because they had a sale. I’ve only had it on for today so I will report back with more pictures and updates. I plan to run my tonneau most of the time and use this for camping or trips with the dog.
$729 shipped.

That is one sharp looking rig Too Many Tacos! That’s got to be the best looking canopies for these trucks IMHO.

I ran around with my softopper on for a few weeks and really have enjoyed it so far for what it is. I haven't had any leaks and I was able to remove it and reinstall my tonneau back on in 30min.

Once the economy reopens(*sigh) I am going to contact a local fabricator who makes aluminum boat towers for radar/ poles and see if they can build me a clean and simple rack to go over top of the canopy. Most of the off the shelf racks for sale out there are a little too busy for my taste(ala Jeep Wranglers on ‘roid-rage).

Thanks!

Checkout my friend Joe at @mobtownoffroad on IG. He has made some soft topper racks for Tacoma’s and I’m sure he’d make one for you too. Tell him I sent ya.

My1sthemi,
Off topic here, just noticed you have a 6’ 4” ORG... I’ve been looking high and low for the part #’s on the rear springs on your truck.

Any chance you can take a look and see if they still have the part #’s on them?

Thanks!

That‘s great. In fact, their canopy rack was what i wanted to model. Small world.
