Probably a stupid question for you all that know a lot more than me lol. Can any of these coilovers kits front and back (Carli, King, Fox, Icon) be used in conjunction with a 6" lift? Or will they need to be specifically made for 6" lifts?

If the lift is a front spacer they would probably work, but you will have to play with pre-load and possibly re-valve them to get the ride back that they had without the lift. The lifts are designed off of factory struts and their reaction to putting a spacer on top. Ideal would be buying a bigger coil over meant for that size of lift. Not much of a price difference between a stock replacement and the lifted version once you go to actual coil overs

King and fox have coilovers for 6” lifts. For the rear you would just need to measure to see how much longer of a shock you would need. These would be off the shelf shocks and not be custom tuned/valved. Well, they will be valved for the 1500 but it will be a generic valving which could leave room for improvement.
If you go with Icon, carli, or thuren you will get the best possible custom valving possible out of specific diameter shocks.

Almost done short of torquing down the control arms. Left them loose so I could lock them down at ride height.

The fox are almost 1” shorter overall. I decided I was going to compensate this with a couple rounds of pre-load on the shock. Everything clears nicely. After I dropped the truck I had 2” rake on the passenger side, and 1 3/4” on the driver. I decided to put my leveling kit spacers on the top of the new strut rather than pre load it to height. Part of my reasoning for doing this is I lost about an inch of down travel between the factory and the fox. They do work. They put you at factory ride height out of the box. However you will need to add preload or a spacer on top of the strut to level it. I’m about 1/2” high in the front at the moment. Going to give it a couple weeks to see how it settles. Wife left for work and I have the littles so it might be tomorrow before it’s buttoned up and I take it for a drive.

Got it all torqued down and put about 50 miles on. I live on dirt roads and initial impression was somewhat of a let down. Yes it felt smoother over the rough parts but I was expecting more. I have washboards on my road just before the stop sign. Normal the truck tries to walk a little to the side but it felt like it never lost contact and stayed straight. Highway was smooth. Comparable to leveled with the stock struck. Went into town and hit a rough road (potholes and such). You still feel them like you should but they were not as harsh. Ran a couple errands and went home. This round on the dirt felt smoother than the first. All the little bumps, rocks, and ruts felt a lot smoother. The ride does not feel stiffer but it seems to really soak up a lot of the roughness. I’m hoping that some more miles will break them in a little more let it ride a little smoother yet. The front settled down already and I’m less than 1/4” high in the front now. I’m assuming it will settle to level or a little less. So far I’m happy with it and feel like the ride improvement was worth the money. However if you put these on your truck just know that you will have to pre load them to make it set level or still run a spacer on top. If you want a stock replacement and could care less about leveling it out these would be perfect without any adjustment. Will update in a few weeks.

So essentially the DT trucks use a strut that sits 2" higher. There was also a thread a while back where somebody compared the factory DS, DT, and DS Bilsteins and came close to the same conclusion. This also means you could use a 6" coilover from the DS trucks to get a 4" lift on the DT. Could be useful to some people considering BDS is the only one out with a true 4" lift.

So for a review after some more drive time. Love the new ride. Overall the ride feels improved in all driving conditions. Barely feel the road on highway, brick streets feel smoother, washboard roads are more stable, and gravel roads do not feel as harsh. Would definitely buy again. I can feel the difference between the front and rear of the truck now. Feels like the rear is stiffer, but waiting on tires before I change the rear shocks. Might add an inch depending on how tires look once they are mounted up.

Definitely would do it again. Ride is still great. I just put on 295 60 R20 Ridge grapplers on. Front still feels good. Can feel the difference in tires but definitely need matching shocks for the rear. It feels stiff since it doesn’t match the front. Also might add an inch to the rear. Not sure yet.
