Hi, I have a 2023 5.7 hemi. Calls for 0W20. I was thinking of switching to Shell Rotella T6 5W40. My neighbor who is a mechanic swears by it and and has been using it in everything he owns for years. It's designed for heavy duty diesel engines so it has more protective additives in it. I just went out of the 36k mile bumper to bumper warranty so I thought now was the time to try it. Has anyone been using this in there hemi that specifies 0W20? Thanks

Yes, searching the forum is very important for incindiary threads like oils, filters, intervals, bikinis/boxers/briefs, caffeine or decaf, etc.

Yes. I've used Rotella T6 in my 2010 Tundra 5.7L and in my 2019 Ram 5.7L.
I replaced the oil about every 4500 miles.
The world did not end. Manufacturers did not raid my home and confiscate "non-spec" oil.
But those engines sure like that oil. Keep in mind it is engineered for compression ignition engines, which the Ram 5.7L is not.
I've now switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 or 5W-40(for hot summer months), still replacing every 4500 miles or so. The engine responds favorably to that oil as well.

I don’t have any problem not running 0w 20 or 5w 20 oil in your Hemi. I run 5w 30 in mine. But you mentioned the 3/36 warranty. If you’re concerned about that keep in mind that the power train warranty runs for 5 years/60k miles. So if you don’t want to risk voiding that warranty you might want to stick with the recommended viscosity until the power train warranty expires.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (the "Ultra" word is important) is a very thin leaning weight oil, but a decent one. A 5w-30 weight of that could maybe pass for a 0w-20 (or close enough) after a few thousand miles, but thats just my opinion based on reviews and what I read, and I am not an oil engineer.

Your engine will run fine on 5w-30 and most likely a good 0w-40 as well. I use 5w-30 in my wife's 2018 Jeep with the 5.7, as it is out of warranty. I don't think T6 is as much as its cracked up to be (at least for gassers), but its definitely not a bad oil. However, as mikeru82 said, if something went wrong with your engine, and if the dealership decided to test the oil, finding the wrong viscosity in there would give them grounds to deny your warranty claim (even if it had nothing to do with the failure). Many dealerships live for looking for flaws to deny warranty work, it seems.

TLDR: It is probably just fine to do but there are risks you need to be aware of.

I wouldn't use it, apparently it has pretty poor control over foaming (which means air, bad for your bearings etc). If you want a stout 5w-40 that cleans extremely well, does not shear down, has best in class additives, will not foam, tons of moly, and can run for really long oil change intervals (like 24k + miles), then get something HPL PCMO 5w-30/40:

If you want something cheaper, but still really good: then go for Mobil 1 FS 0w-40, bonus points for adding a shot of biotech lubeguard.
