For the second oil change now, I've got a dipstick that appears to be reading high. After draining the oil and filling with exactly 7 quarts (1 5 quart jug and 2 single quart bottles), my dipstick reads 1/4 inch over the max (and this is after letting the truck sit for a day and settle).

Either the old oil is not draining out fully or my dipstick is too long (measuring too deeply into the pan).

Anyone have a similar experience?

Engines never drain 100% of their oil, always under shoot it by a quart and top it based on the dipstick, and make sure to idle it to ensure the filters gets full and saturated then check.

In all the vehicles ive owned Ive never had one take exactly what the manual says, could be more but (usually) less

Thank you for the comments. So trust the dipstick in this case?

That would mean draining a bit out as being a quarter inch high seems like it might be a bit much.

I would always go by the dipstick, the manual is just a "guideline", lots of reasons why it could be different.

1/4" high probably isnt anything terrible, I would drain a little bit but that's just me.

1/4 is fine, but this is the reason why I always fill back 1/2 a quart less, because I may not have gotten all the oil out. That way I can top off a little and get it just under the line.
