Oil Catch Can on PCV Return to Throttle Body - are they worth it?

Has anyone had any problems with having a catch can installed with state emmissions testing? I'm new to CT, which is a CARB state, and am not sure how serious the "inspection" is.

Mine will ping with 87 without fail. 89 is fine unless I'm pulling a trailer. I've actually used UNL88 (E15) without any issues and have the same experience as using 89, it's usually way cheaper than 89 (and sometimes 87) so nowadays I opt for that if available.

Same here, 87 is pretty bad and 89 is better but still noticable under load. All the gas I can buy up here is using some percentage of Ethanol, anywhere between 5 to 15 percent. I have not noticed any difference on pinging from where I get the gas, except the one time I got caught in the middle of nowhere with my trailer coming home and was forced to purchase from some small town general store. I was cringing hard for the next 2 hours.

I plan to purchase 3 or 4 gerry cans for next season, and just put them in the bed of my truck for long towing trips. Not getting caught like that again!

I carry two bottles of octane booster in my bed box for that reason. Higher octane seems to be a must when towing anything over 3000 lbs it seems.

A catch can is a good investment, but no need to spend over $100 on one, u less you just like telling people you have (insert name brand) part installed on your truck. This is what I have. It's basically the same thing as the UPR catch can. Has a drain valve in bottom of it so you never have to unscrew the bottom like most require. I empty about 2 oz of crap out of it every 2000 miles.

Mishimoto seems to have the best mount and location though.

"Best mount and location" is a bit subjective. Personally I think where mine mounts is more aesthetically appealing when looking under the hood. Also it doesn't work with the Vararam or RamAir intakes.

Don't have hoses stretched all the way to radiator

Hehehe it works with the ram air as well as almost every other catch can.... Horribly. As for best mount I was mostly talking about how generally not mounting catch cans to the engine is a bit better.

Maybe it was the S&B it didn't fit with. Either way, saying it's the "best" is still subjective.

No the s&b works great with it. You have to basically remove the ram air to get to it or reach under it or install their drain kit. Doesn't work with the varam at all.

So I was correct to begin with. Got it

Alabama and we sit about 300 feet in elevation where I live - Generally stay in the South East. I run 87 octane. Most stress I throw in the engine is when I pull my Travel Trailer - I pretty much stay in 6th gear between 2,000 to 2,500 RPMS during the drive with the 3.21 gears I have. But I do have fun skirting around town, if I wanted fuel economy I would have gone with the 3.6L with the 3.55 gears. She hums nicely with the mild Flowmaster exhaust...

I installed the Amazon catch can before my 2200 miles trip to colorado. Came back and emptied a little under a cup worth of oil. Was shocked for sure to see that much.

So stupid question here, if your emptying any oil or crud out of catch can are you replacing that oil back into truck with new oil? Seems like it would be running lower oil now right?

Most of it isnt oil, which is why it's not a good thing you dump what you do empty out back into the crankcase.

Wait ,what you just said most of it wasn't oil why dump that back into the engine then, how can that be good for oil that's clean?

It’s all oil in the summer. Winter it’s mixed with water due to condensation build up

And over the course of 5k miles it totals up to about 8oz of oil. From my experience. So you wouldn’t notice it on a dip stick.

It's not "all oil" no matter what time of year.
