Hey all!

I have a 2019 ram with the 5.7L hemi in it. Im wondering what everyones thoughts are here. Im at 150,000KMs (canada) (93,000M) and ive been running royal purple 5w20 since new. The price of this oil is killing me as i do frequent oil changes to try to help this girl live forever. i do 5000KM (3100M) oil changes. im thinking im going to switch to a cheaper brand of oil to try and save some money. I work as a distributor of industrial supplies so i get a decent discount on a couple brands. Below are the ones i have access to at much cheaper then the outrageous $85/5L jugs of royal purple.

Irving Max-1
Kendall
Cam2

Let me know what you guys think or if these are no good if i should maybe just go with some canadian tire mobil 1 or something.

Thanks in advance all!

With short LOF as stated. Any synthetic oil that meets specs is fine. I would not get caught up on brands. There’s no benefit. Cheapest and/or affordable priced.

I can see why you're going broke using Royal Purple if you're doing 3k mile oil changes. That's normal with conventional motor oil but excessive with full synthetic. If you're happy with RP just changing to 5k mile OCI's will save you some coin. But to answer your question, you might consider Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. You can usually find it for under $10 a quart (USD).

As stated above, oil brands are less important than in the past. The biggest factor for wear protection is shear stability, espeically with the lighter oils manufacturers are recommending now. Here's a 10 minute video which you might find interesting. It's mainly talking about an AI video that claims 5w 30 protects better than 0w 20, but he talks about the importance of shear stability starting at about the 5 minute mark.

I agree could care less about a brand name i just want to make sure i do all i can to avoid lifter failure. my dads truck just ran into that with 420,000kms on it using conventional oil its whole life. Im just not super farmilliar with the brands and i dont want an oil that doesnt have good properties to prolong the life.

i can get both irving and the cam2 brand for about $5/L and the Kendall for about $9/L or i could go the pennzoil way at about $10/L at canadian tire

These trucks don't suffer from the failing lifter issue. Dodge/Ram switched suppliers and have better lifters now.

As far as your options you listed . Kendall is the I ky name I recognize, and from what I've seen it's a good quality oil. Just make sure to use full synthetic. You are probably at a good mileage to switch to a high mileage oil as well.

i use the exact same oil and change it at the same mileage and hate the pricing.. i at least work at a NAPA store so that helps.. i really feel like changing at this mileage really helps.. i had a 92 chevy that i got 358,000 on the first engine doing this and a 2001 silverado that i ran up to 370,000 on the original engine.. it obviously helps, just doesn't help our wallets..

Thats the issue right. Like theres no such thing as changing the oil too much but at that price that frequently hurts the wallet

Royal Purple also needs changed more often because it breaks down faster than other synthetics and has higher wear.

There is a huge difference in oil brands and what each of these companies put in their products. For me I will not use pennzoil, quaker state or Castrol, wouldn't use this stuff on a tricycle. Just my opinion. We get to hung up on this or this. Use a good brand and a regular maintenance schedule and you should be alright.

Pennzoil is one of the top brands right now with the ultra platinum oils. It actually performs better then Mobik1 and Asmoil(in some tests). What is your dislike of it.

Why do you recommend against certain brands without naming those you do recommend.
Any credibility you had here is now gone.
