308 is very close to the NATO 7.62, that has been one of, if not the most used and still used, chambering in the world. The '06 was dropped as the prefered chambering many years ago and for good reason. Besides, over penetration is wasted energy. If all of the energy is used in the animal, then it is more efficient. Thus, a bullet design is actually more important.
