SUVs replaced the station wagon because the station wagon was built on a car platform where the SUV was built on a truck platform. That's why all US manufacturers have focused on the SUV and trucks and stopped making most cars. The EPA has different requirements for trucks than cars, so the manufacturers are leaning to larger trucks, in an effort to bypass the restrictions on cars, ultimately using more fuel and being worse for the environment.
