New info on Gas tank fueling issue

I stopped "topping off" after the first time the issue happened.
But you topped off before that right? So just curious if your topping off is what caused the issue?

I top off the SUV because it has a regular cap, no warnings, and no issues. My boat manual says not to top off so I don't, and no issues (others who top off with the same model have carbon canister and venting issues as the gas warms up in the tank and expands into those systems). My RAM manual says not to top off so I don't, and no issues.

I see a pattern here...

Your SUV still has a charcoal can and vent line, and can have the same issues with "topping off" as your Ram. Shoot, 2nd Gen Dakotas had that issue if you topped off. And that was back in 1998-2003. While it would rarely effect being able to fill the tank, you would get check engine lights for the EVAP system

The thing that sucks is that if you’re at a pump that keeps “clicking” and stops pumping. How would you truly know you’re topped off if the thing won’t pump right. Guess you’d have to do some quick math before you start pumping to see how much fuel you actually need, or watch the fuel gauge to see when it’s full.

I'm guilty of leaning in and hitting start to fire up the electronics and check the gas gauge before disconnecting because I didn't fully trust the pump.

When I first bought the truck, I was filling, and topping off like I had with every prior vehicle. The first time I had the issue, they replaced the filler tube, and I did some research, and stopped topping off since some people suggested that was the issue. They've since replaced every single component, and the issue still happens. So I see no way my topping off, nearly 2 years ago, could be affecting it now since every part has been replaced since.

The issue, it seems, is actually that some pump nozzles simply don't reach, and open both valves.

You don't know. You just put in what feels like enough, and never truly fill your tank until you hit a pump that works.

I saw that, that someone figured out the nozzle length makes a difference. Places like Costco have put new nozzles to " reduce emissions while fueling". I know those nozzles are short, and many others may be.

"Costco has transitioned to a new, safer “drip less” nozzle that features an interlock boot on the nozzle spout. The new nozzles will only dispense fuel if the boot is securely seated on the vehicle fuel port. This feature improves both safety and the environment, which is why we’ve made the change. The nozzle also prevents spills, drips, and “burps” that can release gas into the environment. Or worse, onto our members."

I call it annoying.

I call it BULL SHIRT! (censors lol)

I would have done the same...except I read the manual before my truck arrived. It's very clear that topping off is not acceptable.
Just like my boat manual that said the same thing.

Yup...been there, done that - I said it - some nozzles are too curved and don't reach all the way in - the capless system was not made for current pumps. But some dolt in an office said it's ok.

I changed my tank and one of the vapor lines this week on my 2020 Big Horn 5.7L with the 26 gallon tank. It was about a 3-4 hour job for me. My truck was out of warranty but only has 27K miles on it. A couple of notes, I used a Youtube video and it was of great help on what hoses to unhook. YouTube Gas Tank Swap I did not upgrade tanks like this guy, but the video gives you what needs to be done.

I did mine on the ground with the back wheels jacked up. I had a sore neck the next day. Be careful with the clips holding the lines/hoses on, the video shows a tough connector near the fuel pump and I agree. I did break one of the two clips (white one) on this line and O'Reilly had an assortment that had the clip I needed in it. It did fix the issue, no more chugging gas in after the pump clicks.

I would say you need at least a medium mechanical aptitude and good flexibility. Take your time and you'll get it. If you do this, have the truck on empty before your start.

Nice job sir! Anyone ever figure out how to bypass the vapor canister?

My 2021 Big Horn with 58k miles started doing this a few weeks ago. I took it to my dealer. They charged me $36 to diagnosis I needed new tank & filler at the cost of $900
I wrote an email to owner/salesman I purchased from. Said I was happy with dealership & love my truck but not being able to fuel up is ridiculous
service called back and told me dealership will do it for $90 as a goodwill service
when I picked up the truck Friday I was informed it was done under warranty with no cost to me.
Not sure if dealership covered it ( sad as Ram should) or Ram
Either way I’m happy

I started to have the fuel filling issue in my 2019. Originally had the 26 gallon tank but I swapped in the 33 gallon in its place along with the charcoal canister and filler neck. Fills up perfectly now thankfully. I was just curious on what component is the problem? Was it the blue vent valve or the green filler valve? I did notice the new tank has a grey filler valve and maybe that was updated?

When I got my 2020 in the Fall of 2022 I noticed I would have the clicking off issue at pumps with newer handles. I have since made mental notes of stations with old style longer nozzles and try to stick to them.

Meen318 - do you have the details for your tank swap? As I want to do the same swap.

Depends on the pumps even with the same style too.
I have a local BJs I get gas from and out of 4 pumps, only 1 works. I end up waiting in line for a particular nozzle even if the others are free, people think i'm blind or something.

I got all my information from this forum. Link here:

2021 with 33gal tank ... I've noticed the fuel filling issue happens more often during the winter, especially at Costco pumps. When temps go above 50 it doesn't happen.

Does someone have a pic of which line goes from the filler neck to the canister? I was thinking about putting a “T” and a valve on it. This way I can open the valve during fill up to keep the neck flowing, and close it after so the PCM can still run its tests. Not sure how to make it easy to access yet.

Thoughts?
